Newark Airport is 300 Miles Away From Kennedy Airport?

FlyerTalk glx member was looking up flights from San Francisco to either Newark International Airport or John F. Kennedy International Airport in New York, and was astonished to learn that Continental Airlines lists the round-trip mileage between San Francisco and Newark at 5,772 miles, while United Airlines lists the round-trip mileage between San Francisco and John F. Kennedy International Airport at 5,172 miles — a difference of 600 miles, or 300 miles each way.

However, before booking that flight for service between New York and Newark, realize that the 300-mile difference is not a result of some extraordinary supernatural seismic activity or the sudden enlargement of Brooklyn. Rather, there is actually what appears to be a plausible explanation for the discrepancy…
