Points and Fixed Miles Earning Style Option of Hilton HHonors Discontinued as of Today

The Points and Fixed Miles earning style option no longer applies to the Conrad Koh Samui — or any other hotel property participating in the Hilton HHonors frequent guest loyalty program, for that matter — as of today. My preferred earning style for many years in the Hilton HHonors frequent guest loyalty program — Points and Fixed Miles, which was one of three MyWay earning style options — has been discontinued as of today and is no longer available.

The Points and Fixed Miles earning style option allowed you to earn ten base Hilton HHonors frequent guest loyalty program points per eligible United States dollar spent, plus 500 frequent flier loyalty program miles per stay. Exceptions applied at Hampton Inn, Hampton Inn & Suites and Homewood Suites by Hilton, where you were able to earn 100 frequent flier loyalty program miles per stay.

For additional information and analysis of what this change could mean, please refer to the article which I posted here at The Gate on November 4, 2013, where I stated the reasons why I recommended choosing the Points and Points earning style option — although you may switch between that option and the Points and Variable Miles earning style option anytime you want. However, your choice must be implemented at least 72 hours before your stay.

Although the majority of FlyerTalk members are not happy about this latest policy change to the Hilton HHonors frequent guest loyalty program, how will the discontinuation of the Points and Fixed Miles earning style option affect you — if at all?

Phew, for a second I thought that Points+Cash burning option was discontinued, and my heart skipped a beat.

Last time when Points and Miles was useful was in the era of BMI, when one would earn 3.000 miles for a 3-night stay. After a year of regular travels one had enough to enjoy an award flight with significant other, plus 1-2 weeks of stays at great Conrad/Hilton hotels around the world.

Not affected at all by this recent change…

I am currently a Gold HHonors member and this is almost certain to push me into SPG hotels. Hilton’s points are like pesos when redeeming for mileage but SPG points are far more valuable at 1:1 with most airlines and come with an added bonus of 5,000 free miles when transferred in blocks of 20,000. This was a real blunder on Hilton’s part as I’m sure they will lose significant business for this devaluation.
