If you received an e-mail message offering you 1,000 American Airlines AAdvantage frequent flier loyalty program miles in return for completing the entire survey — purportedly taking only 15 minutes to complete — do not waste your time, according to FlyerTalk members who claim that they were “kicked out” or “weeded out” after taking the time to complete the survey because they did not qualify.
Frankly, this is a deplorable marketing tactic if it is indeed true. To wave a reward like a carrot in return for taking the time and effort to submit potentially valuable information to a company which could use that information to its benefit — only to leave the participant of the survey with nothing for his or her efforts — borders on fraud, as it leaves the participant feeling empty and cheated
Be wary of these words in future offers: “if you qualify.” It is usually up to the marketing company as to whether or not you qualify for a survey; and usually you will not know exactly what answers will qualify you. Reputable companies such as e-Rewards and MyPoints will usually compensate you a fraction of the amount of the reward offered for your time if indeed you do not qualify for a survey — although that depends on whether the consolation compensation is even worth the time and effort. At least with those companies, you still get something for your efforts.
Although this survey is purportedly being conducted by Lieberman Research Worldwide — a third-party company — it certainly does not bolster the reputation of American Airlines. Are members of the AAdvantage frequent flier loyalty program supposed to perform due diligence at every offer because they have become suspect at best? As unfair as it may be, apparently so.
Even if you complete the survey after being deemed fully qualified, there is no guarantee that you will receive the 1,000 American Airlines AAdvantage frequent flier loyalty program miles which you have earned.
If you still feel you want to take a chance and complete the survey, that is up to you. Although I usually encourage you to participate in offers to quickly earn frequent travel loyalty program miles and points, I personally would not advise it in this particular case.
Needless to say, I did not participate in completing the survey.
