Up to 120% Increase in Points for Rewards? Hertz Devaluation Worse Than Expected?

Point redemption levels for rewards for members of the Gold Plus frequent renter loyalty program of Hertz Rent-A-Car were supposed to increase up to 15 percent in the United States, Canada, Puerto Rico and the United States Virgin Islands as of October 1, 2013, as reported here at The Gate on July 2, 2013 — but FlyerTalk members are reportedly experiencing “sticker shock” with some of the increases which have actually been implemented.

“The Adrenaline collection got hit pretty hard”, according to content posted by FlyerTalk member turbov6. “Old rate for a 4-day weekend was 3000 points. It’s now 6600 points.”

Perhaps my math is off, but that is an increase of 120 percent — not 15 percent.

FlyerTalk member and community director SanDiego1K reports that a redemption of points for three days cost her 1,900 points but increased the next day to 2,025 points.

At an increase of approximately 6.6 percent, that is not too bad.

However, SanDiego1K also reports that a redemption of points for a one-way car rental was 1,000 points — but it increased 32.5 percent to 1,325 points.

There is some good news, according to FlyerTalk member dmitri: some new redemption opportunities became available — such as a three-day weekend rental or one-day specialty vehicle rental.

If these adjustments were really necessary, Hertz handled the devaluation in a manner better than many other frequent travel loyalty programs in recent years — except for the claim that “point redemption levels for Rewards will increase a modest 10–15% in the United States, Canada, Puerto Rico and U.S.V.I.” FlyerTalk members have been reporting that the rates of some rewards increased well beyond 15 percent.

Frankly, I find that to be a misrepresentation — perhaps even so far as to possibly call it deception — to members of the Gold Plus frequent renter loyalty program on the part of Hertz which significantly negates the way this devaluation was originally handled, as some of those increases in the redemption levels of points really Hertz…

…but then again, I suppose that announcing that “…in light of rising costs, we find it necessary to implement our first reward redemption point increase since 2008. Beginning October 1, 2013, point redemption levels for Rewards will increase up to 120%” would not exactly have pleased members of the Gold Plus frequent renter loyalty program of Hertz Rent-A-Car — but at least they would have been prepared for it.

    I periodically receive a promotion from Delta Airlines saying I can “Earn 3,400 miles or more” (https://offer.hertz.com/offers/index.jsp?targetPage=DLSM.jsp&id=21172), but it NEVER worked in reality, the promotional coupon was always rejected in my on-line reservation. When I asked Delta, they rerouted me to Hertz. And Hertz said that they have no idea why the PC coupon was being rejected — and the communication ceased. So I have not really the best opinion of HERTZ… But then I do not care too much, I only rent a few times every year.

    Remember how bad rental car companies used to be… So hertz is the best one can expect at the moment. But their online reservation and billing system is very deceptive.
