It’s not clear from the article whether or not I have to credit my entire stay to SkyMiles, or can earn the 1,000 SkyMiles even if my stay is otherwise crediting to SPG or some other airline program.

Delta is ending the earning ability with FedEx, maybe this is to make up for that loss?

The following text is from the terms and conditions of this promotion, starflyer:

“To receive miles in lieu of Starpoints, recipient must participate in the Airline Direct Deposit portion of the Starwood Preferred Guest program. With Airline Direct Deposit, Starpoints earned from eligible hotel stays and select bonus offers will be converted automatically into miles, will be credited to your Delta Air Lines SkyMiles account and may not be transferred back to your SPG account. If recipient does not participate in Airline Direct Deposit, Starpoints will be earned in the Starwood Preferred Guest program. Members may select Delta Air Lines SkyMiles as their currency of choice at SPG.com/moremiles.”

Based on this text, I would conclude that — as long as you book your hotel reservations using Rate Plan SHMILES — you should earn those 1,000 Delta Air Lines SkyMiles regardless of how you credit your stay.

      I hope this helps, starflyer.
