All Nippon Airways has reportedly sent a notice to its customers via e-mail message that the baggage allowance for economy class passengers will be reduced on international flights effective as of June 1, 2013, supposedly becoming the first commercial airline based in Asia to do so.
The first piece of checked luggage for passengers assigned to seats in the economy class cabin will still be included free of charge. However, the second checked bag — currently also included free of charge — will now cost $100.00; while each additional checked bag will cost $200.00 apiece.
That $100.00 fee will match the fee effective as of June 1, 2013 for passengers assigned to seats in the economy class cabin who check a second piece of luggage on transpacific flights operated by United Airlines, which currently does not charge any extra for that second checked bag.
A campaign during which you get to check that second bag at no additional charge if you check in online for an international flight operated by All Nippon Airways from June 1, 2013 through the end of September — combined with several weeks of advanced notice from the original announcement — at least gives passengers assigned to seats in the economy class cabin time to prepare for the reduced allowance for checked bags. However, this campaign does not apply to you if you have a connecting flight which is not operated by All Nippon Airways.
Additionally — as the result of a purported claim by All Nippon Airways to “harmonize” with joint-venture partner airlines such as Lufthansa and United Airlines — the total dimensions of each piece of luggage for all classes of service cannot exceed 158 centimeters or 62 inches. These dimensions have reportedly been reduced from the former maximum limit of 208 centimeters or 81 inches.
FlyerTalk members cite this new policy by All Nippon Airways as being “not cool”, hoping that other carriers based in Asia do not follow suit.
I would say not to count on that. Airlines are businesses. If they can figure out a way to increase revenue without suffering a significant loss of customers, they will do so…
