Starting on May 1, 2013, you can earn double Starpoints on all eligible stays in the Double Take promotion offered by the Starwood Preferred Guest frequent guest loyalty program through July 31, 2013.

Additionally, you can earn a bonus of 500 Starpoints for stays booked through the mobile Internet site or mobile telephone applications for either Android or iPhone operating systems.

While you can earn the 500 bonus Starpoints for booking your room reservation at all of the hotel and resort properties which participate with the Starwood Preferred Guest frequent guest loyalty program, there is a list of hotel and resort properties — 161 in 34 countries, by my count — which are not participating in the Double Take promotion.

Elite-level extra Starpoint earnings and other bonuses will not be doubled — only the base earnings of two Starpoints per dollar will be doubled. There is no limit to the number of bonus Starpoints that can be earned during the promotion period.

An eligible stay is defined as one or more consecutive nights paying an eligible rate in the same hotel property — regardless of the number of times you check in or check out which occur and post to your Starwood Preferred Guest frequent guest loyalty program account. Eligible stays with at least one night during the earning period will receive a bonus. An eligible rate is any rate that is eligible to earn Starpoints in the Starwood Preferred Guest frequent guest loyalty program. Other terms and conditions apply.

Many FlyerTalk members seem to be taking a double take on participating in this latest promotion, as they have expressed a tepid reaction at best — among the reasons are that:

  • The Cash & Points option is not eligible
  • The list of hotel and resort properties not participating
  • You cannot earn the 500 Starpoint mobile bonus if you must book your reservations through a corporate travel department

While I agree that this is not exactly the best quarterly promotion ever offered by the Starwood Preferred Guest frequent guest loyalty program, it is still better than nothing. I recommend registering for this promotion anyway, as registration is required to be eligible for this promotion and there is no cost to you.

The last day to register for this promotion is June 30, 2013.
