In Memoriam: SWABrian of Southwest Airlines

FlyerTalk has lost its first member who was an official company representative.

Brian Lusk — also known as FlyerTalk member SWABrian — passed away this morning, according to Rob Hahn of Southwest Airlines, who is also known as FlyerTalk member SouthwestRob. Brian was the corporate historian for the airline, and he was well liked by FlyerTalk members who are now mourning his loss. He officially represented Southwest Airlines on FlyerTalk and has provided a wealth of information and knowledge related to Southwest Airlines and the aviation industry in general as a result of his passion and dedication for all things related to aviation.

Brian also had a sense of humor, which was especially evident in the Flashback Fridays series of the corporate weblog of Southwest Airlines.

However, Brian was also known for his genuine care for customers of Southwest Airlines — and those FlyerTalk members who were fortunate enough to meet him in person reflect back on how Brian was a positive influence on their lives. For example, FlyerTalk member expert7700 recalls how Brian graciously gave a tour of the headquarters of Southwest Airlines two years ago. “We immediately felt welcome and he made us feel that we were the most important part of his day”, posted expert7700. “He was a walking encyclopedia on every piece of Southwest Airlines / Love Field history. He showed us the archives room and we could immediately tell how happy he was managing that area.”

FlyerTalk member nsx — who is the current president of TalkBoard and one of the moderators of the Southwest Rapid Rewards forum on FlyerTalk — also met Brian in person and posts that “He was as much a prince in person as he was on this forum.” Furthermore, nsx has an interesting suggestion to honor Brian: “I’d like to see a virtual wall walk of the historical displays all up and down the hallways at HQ. Hire Google to bring their mapping camera in and run it through the halls. Link to it from blogsouthwest and dedicate it to Brian.”

I think that is a great idea, and I hope that the possibility of bringing it to reality is considered.

The last time Brian posted on FlyerTalk was at 2:34 in the afternoon Eastern Daylight Time on Friday, July 15, 2011 — and the last word he posted on FlyerTalk was the word right.

That sounds about right to me in terms of at least one word which is apropos to the legacy of Brian Lusk.

The cause of the death of Brian is still not publicly known at this time.

Please post your thoughts, appreciation, regrets and memories about Brian — as well as your condolences to his family — here.

May you rest in peace, Brian — and thank you for bringing a positive influence to FlyerTalk by selflessly assisting its members in the Southwest Rapid Rewards forum with your valuable knowledge, contributions and information. You will be missed.
