Some FlyerTalk members intend to skip taking advantage of this promotion, citing that the conversion of 20,000 Starwood Preferred Guest frequent guest loyalty program points to what would amount to 31,250 Avios — when including the bonus of 5,000 Starpoints which Starwood Preferred Guest adds to any point conversion at 20,000 points — is the best deal of all of the options listed above. Even then, some FlyerTalk members believe that this offer is tepid at best.
Should you take advantage of this offer? Well — depending on the frequent guest loyalty program — the points used for hotel room award night stays can exceed the value of Avios towards airline award tickets, such as this example provided by FlyerTalk member Raffles where 50,000 Hilton HHonors frequent guest loyalty program points worth approximately £200 would convert to 5,000 Avios worth approximately £40. Also depending on the frequent guest loyalty program, a free award night is still a free night where you do not need to pay a single penny — whereas a “free” flight is anything but that, as award tickets are usually exclusive of taxes and certain fees which you are still required to pay.
If you happen to have enough frequent guest loyalty program points sitting dormant in your account and Avios have enough of a value, go for it. Otherwise, I would advise passing on this promotion and put your frequent guest loyalty program points to better use elsewhere.
