Toyota Partners With ANA to Develop Economy Seats Fit For All Body Types

All Nippon Airways and Toyota Boshoku Corporation combine skills to design and develop a new economy class seat.

All Nippon Airways (ANA) and Toyota Boshoku Corporation have joined forces to design and develop a new economy class airline seat. In a press release, ANA says it believes the new seat will give customers a lasting impression of ANA’s commitment to quality, value and comfort.

Toyota Boshoku,  is a major supplier of automobile interiors and has decades of experience in designing and developing seats for a variety of Toyota automobiles. ANA selected them as partner because of their reputation for high-quality craftsmanship and manufacturing capabilities.

The new seat was developed with three distinct design characteristic in mind; devotion to comfort, maximum user-friendliness and creating a sense of space.

Using ergonomics, the design attempts to limit muscle fatigue around the hip while firmly supporting the pelvic area, allowing passengers to maintain a comfortable and relaxing posture. The seat and the backrest are both designed to evenly distribute body pressure.

The two companies performed a range of tests using multiple angles to design the position of the tray tables and armrests and to determine the ideal height and natural contour to accommodate the largest variety of body types.

In order to create a sense of space, the seat headrest has rounded edges increasing the passenger’s field of view thus providing a sense of openness. The design also makes extensive use of fabric, at the passenger eye-level, to contribute to a soft and welcoming atmosphere.

ANA plans to introduce the new seats on its domestic flights starting in the summer of 2015 and will install them on six of its Boeing 767-300 aircraft by fiscal 2016. The seats on the wide-body aircraft will have a width of 17.5 inches and pitch of 31 inches.

I agree with KRSW, I have not been in a Toyota/Lexus seat that I thought was comfortable. There is no onesize fits all seat, as no two people are the same.

I just hope they're better than what Toyota puts in their cars. The Camry & Lexus rentals I've had were NOT comfortable. At least someone's thinking about it though.

"sense of space" .... en lieu of actual space for the passenger. Euro carriers should love this ... or anyone who operates a DreamLiner ...
