Stayed at the GH NY for the third time, but my first after the refurbishment. Frankly, I found the property cold, soulless and the furnishings are extremely cheap.

Stayed in a VIP suite, and the VIP manager contacted me and arranged some Champagne, chocolate coated strawberries, as well as the mini bar to be filled for free. (Since when do hotels not have mini bars? Do I really want to go to the lobby to get a drink in the middle of the night?) We were also told that room service ends at 11PM.

Despite the recency, the furniture, carpet and the fitting in the bathroom were showing signs of decay.

The hot food in the club lounge for breakfast looked nice, but lacked any taste.

The entire hotel seems to have downsized and reduced any form of service where possible. Wine in the bar is self service, as is the 'The Market.' As I said, no food and drink in the mini bar in the room is inconvenient.

The most negative part of the stay was that we were awoken on the first morning at 7AM by banging and drilling noises above our room on the 33rd floor. I called front desk and asked if there was construction above us. He said no construction was occurring, and the room above us was occupied. I did not request a room change. On the second morning, we were convinced as it occurred again, at the same time, and the sound was clearly from construction that continues throughout the day. I was furious that the property would lie to us, and perform construction without any prior warning.

I can't wait for the Park Hyatt to open, and until then, I'll stay at the Andaz 5th Ave.
