W Reykjavik

From "Pure Energy" magazine, a publication of the City of Reykjavik:

"The Icelandic National Concert & Conference Center and Hotel. Opening Autumn 2009 in the Reykjavik City Harbor...

W Hotel Reykjavik
400 rooms
Portus [the developers] has reached an agreement with the international hotel chain Starwood Hotels to operate a hotel in conjunction with the Icelandic National Concert and Conference Center. Portus Group and Starwood hotel chain believe it is an interesting alternative to build a W Hotel next to the Icelandic National Concert and Conference Center with luxury rooms and condos, in close cooperation with the Center."

It appears that the W Reykjavik is now less certain. The concert hall and conference center opens in May 2011, but the hotel plans are getting reevaluated.

Construction plans include a 250-400 room, four-star hotel on the Austurbakki site, next to the Concert Hall and Conference Centre. Underground walkways will link the hotel to Harpa Concert and Conference Centre.

A decision has been made to negotiate with EFLA for consultancy services relating to the hotel. EFLA will bring together the site owners, interested financers, investors and operators for the planned hotel. It is anticipated that an announcement regarding investors and the hotel operator will be made late year 2010.

If everything goes as scheduled, a hotel will open adjacent to Harpa in May 2013.

Given the economic problems in Iceland this is no surprise at all.

Hotel 101 is a nice alternative! Not Starwood, but a very nice small Boutique Hotel.
