What happens to Gold points if you canx a reservation?

What happens to Gold points if you canx a reservation?
If I book a hotel nite with my 15K Gold points, then hafto canx it, do I get the points back with the original expiration date? Lose the points?

When cancelling a free night stay reservation, the points expiration date remains as the original.
