I think your calculations are correct. I don't believe the status match of Gold gets you the increased % earn, does it?

So if you've spent $1500, you will get 1% or $15. Now after that, it will go up to 3%.

PS: My next AA trip will have a 6.4% return on the "fare" component when credited to WS$.

I don't know how that compares to your AE experience, but it is a little better than crediting to the devalued BA Executive Club. (Which I'm a member of, for legacy reasons.)

Some say the best part about the program is the redemption opportunities.

You can use a small amount of WestJet dollars toward any booking at any time. There is no mystery seat inventory and no blackouts.

Cheers,
Darren

1%. Not even worth calling it a reward. That is a rounding error.

When I spend 9.97 at a store and pay cash 9.95, should I call the 2% a "reward"?

You may want to brush up your math.

Ha ha you are right. Clearly lacking enough caffeine today.

In any case, 1% is not worth calling at a reward. Imagine if a retail store said hey big 1% off all purchases today. Would that excite the masses?

I think you are ignoring some of the other benefits, specifically the threshold benefits.

Math check - that's only 0.2%. If you actually got 2%, it would be no different than using a cash-back reward credit card.

Only people who don't know how to maximize frequent flyer benefits.

Which is a VERY large portion of WS's customer base.

Uninformed consumers are great customers, but FlyerTalk is all about informing people and maximizing benefits.

If you frame it right, yes. See Air Miles Cash Rewards. The revenue-based return at Sobeys, Lawtons, etc. is less than 0.5%. Yet people are eager for it.

Now there are credit cards that give you 2% back on groceries. Doesn't sound like much. But when you think of it as one week of free food every year, it looks a lot rosier.

But when it comes to flight tickets, 1% really is not much. Then again, most people would prefer cheaper tickets over higher rewards.

They usually get posted the day after your statement is issued.
