WS reduces service in/to/from Alberta

Noticed this in TGAM, but don't see any mention of it on WS's site or airlineroute.net:

If Alta/oil economy does not start getting better in 6 months, does Westjet start delaying aircraft deliveries?

Thanks, was just curious as to what the real effect was.

Why would they do that? They have other bases they can re-allocate service to, which is what they seem to be doing (such as YYZ or YVR).

Yes, they are moving aircraft out of Alta., but with the drop in the CDN $, can the US leisure travel cover the loss of pax out of Alta? Hawaii fares have been very low this year in order to fill sits, so I don't think YVR is Westjet answer. Also, Westjet deliveries is putting growth into its fleet, so it's just not about moving aircraft to different markets.

Very unlikely to delay deliveries.

The WS plan B is to not renew leases that are expiring in 2016/17/18. I think there are around 5-10 lease that expire per annum.

Second plan is to sell off 700s and continue to accept more 800s.

Third plan would be to park some or all of the 600s.

8 lease return options in 2016, with 7 new aircraft to be delivered (-700s that have all recently been optioned to -800s): WestJet Fleet Plan

I was hoping for more direct flights out of YOW with this news. Oh well.

It'd be great if they used one of those Q400s to increase YQM service with either another YYZ-YQM flight or a YHZ-YQM flight to open up connections.

Not sure of the full details, but apparently they've cancelled some YYC-LAS flights as well from May onwards. Some family members were booked on an evening YYC-LAS in May (not sure of the exact time, but there is often a ~6:15 PM and a ~7:15 PM evening flight). Notified last week that the evening flight is cancelled, and they were rebooked on a mid-day flight.

It looks that Alberta economy could lead to layoffs at Westjet.

I heard the 737 pilots received an email regarding voluntary leaves of absence.

We haven’t made any decisions about leaves, or offered any leaves at this point in time.
