Book a refundable reservation now, as the prices will probably only go up. Seattle sells out during the summer cruise season.

I booked a room for a couple nights in downtown Seattle in Aug 2014 (Fri & Sat nights) for out-of-town guests. Booked it probably a couple months in advance. There were plenty of 3.5-4 star hotels available for ~$250. Places like Sheraton, Renaissance, Warwick. But I just looked up prices for a random weekend in Aug 2015, and everything is close to or above $300 right now for those same hotels. Go ahead and book a refundable rate now just in case, but you should check back 2-3 months before your trip. I think you'll see that some of those rates will have come down a bit.

Or consider using points. I'm also going to Seattle in August 2015, for a conference (which obviously also creates demand for hotel rooms). I'd rather pay 35,000 IHG points than $355 per night to stay at the Crowne Plaza -- and if rates drop points bookings can be cancelled without penalty.

The city is under-hotelled and demand during cruise season is crazy high. A couple who are friends of mine came through town to catch an Alaska sailing in late June, and despite my warnings didn't start looking for a hotel until a week or two before arrival. Not a thing under $300 in the city by then, and that was for relative hovels near Highway 99. To go cheaper they had to look down on the airport strip or out on Bainbridge, for goodness' sake. hey ended up doing AirBnB, which might be an option for OP if not picky about location and amenities.

airport lodging will be cheaper....

Many hotels offer cruise traffic shuttles. some of them at the airport and others in Seattle but not right next to the piers.
