Transportation btw DCA and IAD

I need suggestions how to get from DCA to IAD and have about 3 hours to do so with only carry-on luggage. Would prefer public transportation if practical. Thanks in advance.

There is limited public transport. You can take the subway to the end of the line, west falls church I think, and take a metrobus from there. I would just bite the bullet and take a cab - it's about $40.

You can adjust the date and time according to your schedule and see what www.wmata.com comes up with.

You can take the subway from DCA to West Falls Church which is a stop or two from the end of the line. From there, you can take a commercial bus service called the Washington Flyer for about $8. It runs on the half hour. Just google Washington Flyer and you should find the info. I have taken it and been pleased.

DCA to IAD on public transportation? EASY!

Lisa,

Connected directly to the Reagan DCA Airport is a Washington Metro station. Take the blue route northbound to the Rosslyn station. Get off and take the orange line westbound to West Falls Chruch station.

From the West Falls Church station, go outside and pick up the Washington Flyer bus ($9) which goes nonstop to Dulles IAD Airport.

Public Transportation: From DCA, take the Metro Blue line to Rosslyn, then transfer to the Orange Line. Take the Orange Line to West Falls Church. From there, you can take the Washington Flyer Shuttle to IAD for 9 dollars. Including the Metro fate, the total cost should be about $14. Total time is usually 75-90 minutes.

Many locals park at DCA, and take SuperShuttle to IAD, so this is another option, and the fare will probably run you around $30.

IIRC, taxi fare from DCA-IAD is around $55-60

Yellow metro line to L'Enfant Plaza metro station (4th stop from DCA). Walk outside and take bus 5A which will take you to IAD. Metro takes 15 minutes, bus will take around 90 minutes. Make sure you time it right because only one bus an hour. $.45 for the metro, $3 for bus. Make sure you have exact change for bus because they will not give you change.

Edit: The bus is also available from Rosslyn metro station but its first stop is L'Enfant Plaza so you will have a better chance of getting room for luggage and a seat.

The part I bolded is why I personally, if I were in the OP's position, would spend the extra few bucks and go with Washington Flyer. It runs every 20 minutes, I believe.

Then again, with 3 hours, the OP could conceivably make their connection anyway...but I wouldn't chance it, personally.

West Falls Church is not the end of the Orange Line; Vienna/Fairfax is.

I vote for the Yellow Line to L'Enfant and then the 5A bus. It takes approximately 60 minutes on the bus, not 90. I have done this many times, and it never strays much from the schedule. Do not try to get on the bus at Rosslyn - far too crowded by that point.

I will be making this trip in late May. Is there room on the bus for luggage?
