I am a regular IAD flier (Last four years) and have been a less frequent traveler from that hub since the 80's. The C/D concourse where United has its mainline flights has always been called a temporary concourse and its maintenance really shows that. It has been refreshed but it is NOT a world class terminal by any stretch of the imagination.
and the fact that even once the train is installed it still does not address United's future home, is there a published plan or is United just moving in with Continental?
Any reading available on the AeroTrain claims that it will terminate at concourse A and then have the ability to be expanded to include a future concourse C.
Anyway you look at this, United seems left in the cold. Are any of you 'in the know' flyertalkers aware of any future United IAD plans and are we ever going to get a United terminal at IAD?
I can give just a little insight to the project. My wife is an architect that worked for a firm that does nothing but airports. C&D are temporary terminals; the definition of temporary is the funny thing. MWAA's definition is 20-30 years!! The problem is coming up with a design that blends well with historic main terminal. I'll have my wife chime in when she gets to work today.

Fantastic. Thanks. You would think that building a C/D terminal that complimented the main terminal would be relatively easy. I actually really like the look of the main terminal which obviously looks like a huge airplane wing. I wonder why there simply could not be other scaled versions of that or go risky and maybe make the other terminals look like other types of wings. United could get delta wing terminal hearkening to an era of Super Sonic Transport

I was wondering when the Aerotain was going to get derailed..... I'm connecting through IAD next weekend from A to C.....really looking forward to the up-to-date options to get me to my gate.....lol
Perhaps it will be ready by xmas.....not holding my breath.

Before passengers can use the train, it must pass a 30-day system demonstration test. For 30 days, the AeroTrain has to be able to operate round-the-clock under real-world conditions. A failure forces the testing cycle to restart from day one.
Yamada said that the system ran well in September for 18 of the 30 days but that testers stopped it after it encountered problems. It wasn't clear what caused the malfunctions, but Yamada said making the required fixes took longer than expected. Yamada said so-called "start-stops" are "not unusual for these types of high-tech systems." He said that the problem is fixed and that a new testing cycle is expected to begin early next week.

"It's uncertain that we will begin to operate by the end of the year," Hamilton said. "We will know later in the year when we can set a date for operations."
I am a local fireman here by the airport and we had a chance recently to tour the trains and the tubes. Very interesting. When asked when they would be running. We were told there are delays. Nothing else.

They could just duplicate the design of the A/B Terminal. I'd gladly settle for that.

This is not true. They have built a train station at the site of the future new C terminal, with an underground walkway that connects back to the current C terminal. On the other side of the loop, the train does terminate at the B concourse though, rather than continue on to D.
So if departing from A, B, C -> you'll take the train.
Departing from D, you're relegated to the mobile lounges (or taking the train to C and walking).
