Since it'll be a "free" silver, people will STILL have to gain a NEW set of 40 Tier Points to get to Gold (not the 30 "extra" Tier Points you'd need to go from an organic Silver card without the fast track). The marketing spin suggests it's "just one step away from Gold", but the reality is that you will be just as far away from gaining a gold card as a bog standard red member.

True, but to requalify as Silver, you only need 10 Tier Points, instead of the 15 you would need if you were Red.

Not bad for non-Amex holders either. I signed up and was given Silver without ever having been an Amex holder. Granted, the 2,000 miles didn't post automatically, but that could be just a time delay issue.

It works for existing Red members as well. You keep your miles, but they did assign a new account #. When you follow the link;there will be a box for existing members to input their Flying Club #.

Where did you see that option? I am all the way to the "confirm" screen but did not see that option

I missed it the first time too, its on the very first screen (Username). There is a link at the bottom that says 'If you're an existing Flying Club member who is new to the website, click here to obtain a username and password. '
After a few security questions I had a new FC number and logging into the FC site confirmed the upgrade to silver!

The Terms and Conditions state that miles cannot be transferred between accounts, so is it possible to effectively upgrade from Red to Silver and have all the miles moved from Red a/c (256k miles) to Silver. I would hate to find I have ended up with just 2,000 miles and lost the Red a/c miles!!
Beautiful. Worked for me. Thanks OP! Now I just need to figure out a way to use those upgrade certs on the express train
I got this offer a week ago and upgraded my account to Silver.
Nice perk from my Platimum Amex card!
I will be flying to London the last week of March and was planning on using the upgrade vouchers for the Heatrow and Gatwick express. Any idea when they mail those out to US based members??

I think they send this out with the elite kit (luggage tags, fancy silver card, etc.) and that isn't dispatched until after your first flight. I could be wrong though...
