Unhappy Redeeming VS miles on US Airline (DL)

This is my first post, forgive me if this has been covered. Due to frequent business trips IAD/LHR in Premuim Economy, I have accumulated quite a few VS miles, and also a hearty desire to avoid London for any personal travel. I have called the VS hotline to try to book award travel on Delta several times for routes within the US or internationally from the US, each time to be told that there is no availability. I have a few questions:
1. I'm guessing that the DL award availability is different than the availability that DL releases to VS members. Is there any web based way to find out this availability without bugging the VS agent?
2. If I were to book a domestic coach ticket using VS miles, do I have to pay their fuel surcharge, or delta's?
3. Is there any logical reason that Virgin Atlantic and Virgin America don't share mileage programs? Since I'm soon moving to Los Angeles, it would be the perfect time to burn these miles on IAD/LAX flights.

Hi and a warm welcome to FlyerTalk.

Delta ceased to be a partner of VS earlier this year so you will not be able to redeem your flights with them. It's strange you weren't informed of that when you called.

Can't answer your question regarding VX but you can always redeem your miles with VS' other airline partners. I wouldn't waste them on internal US flights, I think they represent poor value for your mileage. VS offers excellent award rates from the US West Coast to Japan and Hong Kong for example. A First Class class award round-trip ticket from SFO-HKG with Singapore Airlines can be yours for 130,000 miles. Or fly LAX-NRT round-trip in F for the same miles. If you have no intention of redeeming your miles for VS flights then SQ offers some of the best deals on F awards from the US to Asia.
