$30 for Preferred Seat on TATL A330?

I (LH*G) booked a cheap Y ticket that contains MUC-PHL (US707) and CLT-FRA (US704) on US A330 metal.

The 'my trip' information on USairways.com list my seat on US707 as 7F with a small note: '$30'.

It lists the surrounding seats as 'Choice Seats' which are available for purchase. The Choice Seats FAQ states that Preferred members get the seats for free ... nothing about *G, though. Will I have to shell out $30? It was an automatic assignment.

Same for the return leg on US704. It shows 7B without the $30 comment.

How about US domestic flights? I am booked in what appears to be Choice Seats. Am I 'entitled' to these seats free of charge?

If you have assigned seats already not to worry. You should be fine. You just can't move to another choice seat w/o paying

Same situation as OP. Did US 707 last weekend and was not happy to learn about about a 30$ charge on my cc after that trip. I did not change my seats during OLCI. Called US Callcenter in Germany and was told i should figure it out with customer relations via mail. Not sure if contacting my CC provider is the better choice...

So US is assigning a choice seat without the pax consent and then carging them extra for the choice seat? That doesn't seem right at all. If US wants to charge for "choice seats" fine but assign a non-choice seat and let the pax decide if he or she wants to sit there.

I presume that 7F is your originally assigned seat, and you were not asked if you wanted to pay the extra $30 when you booked it?

I suggest you get ahead of this one: Check your US confirmation and call your credit card company and make sure that you were not charged $30.

Dispute the $30 charge. Don't waste your time calling customer service. If you didn't buy it, they don't have an electronic paper trail proving you asked for it, so they won't be able to provide the credit card company proof.

My mother just told me this happened the other day. I figured she probably changed her seat without recogonizing the charge, but when I asked her again, she insists it was the seat she was assigned and the charge was found later. She called AMEX - they said they would resolve it in FOUR months. US CS said it is not possible, but eh?!

US agents will manually assign most Premium seats to *G without a fee. If a *G goes into change their seats online, the website will ask for money for any premium seat. To avoid this problem, don't change your seats online. OLCI there and that is all. They will not retro-collect the preferred seating fee from you.
