Similar situation and it stinks but will have to adapt. I was able to get upgraded on both ends of a vaca trip over Xmas to pls and that made the mrs very happy. Too many trips on spirit and dm miles but as a non business traveler every $1 counts. I will miss being able to check the bag and bringing beer back this year.
Purely anecodotally and a small sample at that, it seems that the soft landings go to people who either just (as in 100 miles / 1 segment) missed it or who have $ spends which outmatch their status.
But, because US sells status, it's got less motivation to give soft landings because it sells the same thing.
The real question to you is to ask what you want from status. Is it UG's, free luggage and so on. If you need to check a bag, 10 round trips = $500. If it's the UG, the minimum GO fare is $60 now, so 9 segments = $540. If US works for you in general, it's really not a bad deal to buy Silver, it's just a hunk of money in one hunk.

(bolding mine)
This is exactly the way to look at it.

Maybe just PM the OP directly and work something out (or is that against the rules.)
