Companion Upgrades When Elites are on Same PNR

A family member recently made silver, and we have some bookings where we both are traveling together on the same PNR. I am gold. I have noticed that when he and I are on the same PNR, I don't get the upgrade e-mail until the silver window. Last time, it was wide open, so we got the upgrade.

We have a flight in a couple of days, and I didn't get upgraded at gold window even though award inventory was wide open. I didn't receive an e-mail either way. I called in today and was able to get it processed manually. I asked on the phone whether this is a glitch. The agent indicated she had heard of this before -- when two elites who are different levels are companions, sometimes the computer looks for them at the lower elite's window. She said the best way to deal with it is to delete the FF number for the lower tier elite until the upgrade window passes.

I did a fair amount of searching in the forum for this and didn't see this anywhere, although my searching skills stink. Is this a known problem, or was the agent just blowing smoke? Does anyone do this as a matter of course?

There is a thread here somewhere about it. It is a known IT issue on US' end. You are better off leaving the DM number of the second elite off the PNR until after the earlier window is the takeaway.

Exactly. There is a known bug where 2 different Preferred levels on the Same PNR causes upgrades to happen at the lowest-tier's window, or not at all, rather than the higher-tier's which the program rules state should happen.

I've had several "discussions" w/ the DMSC and the Preferred Desk over this issue; they know its an issue but apparently have been "fixing" it for over a year. The best solution is to remove the lowest-status member's DM# from the PNR, and then apply it after the UDU clears.

Just read above comments. Will be flying 11.28 with husband ( silver). I am Platinum. We are on same PNR. I went online to check reservation and tried to take out his FF # but would not let me so called PLATINUM desk. Told them what I wanted to do and she looked at reservation and told me I was SILVER! System would not let her give me Platinum status till she took my husband's FF# out. Once his was gone she put in my FF # and I was suddenly Platinum. That could make a BIG difference in the upgrade window for us.
I do not want to add his number until after our return seats are set given it appears the same thing will happen again. Once his goes in my status drops to silver . Guess we will just keep the passes etc and ask for his miles after we get back. THANKS for letting me know about this glitch!

I'd be curious if this issue has anything to do with who Passenger #1 is on the reservation.

I had this same problem in August. It's ridiculous that US has not fixed this bug yet.

It doesn't. I've been #1 as a Silver w/ my companion as #2 and Gold, and the Auto-upgrade system still sh*t a brick.

But I wonder if the reverse is true. If #1 is the highest level elite, does it always work?

If you split the PNR, will the system recognize you as Platinum and spouse as Silver?

Likely, but that would defeat the purpose of trying to have both parties upgraded at the Platinum window.

Only if #1 is the only elite on the reservation, or if #1 and #2 are the same status level.

In some ways it is worse than ridiculous. It was kind of identified a while back. It was kind of fixed. Now it seems to be kind of broken again.

Something is weird here. I have seen this issue reported many times, yet I have not experienced it as a CP travelling with my GP wife. We get the upgrade email ( or ) at the CP window every time.

Sorry to be daft, but since this is likely to be something I have to do on a regular basis now, what is the procedure for crediting miles after the flight?

Or, lets say I have an outbound on Dec 1 and return on Dec 7. If I put his DM number in the reservation on Dec 4 after we find out about December 7 upgrades, will he get credit for outbound or just return?
