What is gentlemanly about indulging someone else's discourtesy?

Sorry one year old was discourteous to the OP. (S)He should have known better than to scream from stress of being in unfamiliar environment in order to not upset the OP.

You misunderstand. Of course the one-year old wasn't discourteous. His father, however, certainly was.

My nephew flew over 25,000 miles (on American) in the first year of his life, mostly in FC. He was generally very quiet. I don't see a problem with a child doing that as long as the child isn't a screamer/loud. In the OP's case, I sympathize.

Maybe the father figured the baby would be disturbing less people in first than in coach.

We sometimes forget that even the front of an airplane is still nothing more than public transportation...a bus with wings. It sucks, but unfortunately, you can't control who gets on your flight.

Also (not that this is material to your point), are you sure he paid $75? I was 99.9% sure that the "Go First" buy at gate/OLCI upgrades start at $50 for flights under 500 miles, are $100 for flights in the 500-1000 ranges, and then more from there. I'm not sure what the scale is after that, but I would think PHX-BOS would be at least $150, if not more.

Did his father not try to console the child and make him/her more comfortable? If he didn't then I understand, if he did, then he wasn't being discourteous.

If you don't want to fly with other people, there's aways Net Jets. If you do, accept that there are people with one-year old's who cry and get over it.

OP was on a freebie UG and could simply have swapped with someone for his old Y seat if it was a problem.

I'm sure the wife said, "Honey, if you want the first class seat, by all means take it, but you get Junior too". And then the wife slept comfortably from her seat in coach the whole way home.

Feel your pain, and I was the one with an infant. Took all the precautions
and planned well...bottle on take off, just in time for the usual 2 hour nap,
but she would have none of it.....screamed and cried the whole time. No
amount of rocking, cooing, singing quietly, humming, walking, bouncing,
the pacifier which promptly got spit out, would do.

I felt huge guilt and funneled lots of angry stares....there was nothing
I could do, and finally 2.5 hours into a 4 hour flight....sound asleep and
the whole plane clapped softly. I fought back tears, exhausted.

Sorry, for the uncomfortable flight.....it's not as if it would have been
different a few rows back.

Most likely dad had the baby because he's usually able to quiet him/her
quicker, and there is more room then clunking the baby's head or your
elbows on some stranger.

Maybe. Or maybe the father figured, "my kid has a right to be here and if you don't like it, tough," which is a view I see expressed routinely on FT.

Here meaning inside the passenger compartment - as opposed to with the checked luggage?

I suppose the father could have stowed him in an overhead compartment, which at least would have muffled the crying.
