US cancelled my reservation

I had 2 confirmed BC award reservations booked through US Air for EWR-IST-JNB-IST-EWR on a 3 day hold. On day 3 I called to book and was told one of the reservations was cancelled. After 45 minutes and 3 different people the supervisor told me that someone made a mistake and that there was only one seat available for BC on the IST-EWR leg which was with United. They had availability for economy but they said there was nothing they can do. They didn't even appologize! I asked to speak to her supervisor and was told someone would call me back. I'm waiting. Can they do this? Just cancel a reservation and offer me nothing? Do I have any recourse?

Unfortunately, carriers can pretty much do whatever they want until the ticket is actually issued...

Once ticketed, you have an issue. Until then, the "courtesy hold" is just that... a courtesy.

Be diligent and focus on finding new award flights and forget about recourse for the lost reservation.

Not true anymore. DOT in a ruling issued August 19 2011 states, "...allowing reservations to be held at the quoted fare without payment, or cancelled without penalty, for at least twenty-four hours after the reservation is made if the reservation is made one week or more prior to a flight’s departure date".

OP exceeded the 24 hours though.

+1 - OP exceeded the mandated time limit. Anything over 24 is a courtesy. OP would be much better off sitting down and figuring out what he wants now that the original request is not available.

How does one online with USAIR book a ticket to be on hold and not pay?

Call center only - you can't do it on the website.

OP is talking about an award reservation not a paid reservation. The DOT regulations regarding 24 hour cancels are not applicable here.

My faith is restored!

Some good news to report back on. After my award hold was cancelled I spoke with a few US Airways representatives that basically just repeated the same story but offered no solution. I continued to ask to speak to each person's supervisor until I finally was able to speak to a one who, first , offered me an apology, and then found me another routing that actually gets me home faster than the original route!
