OK, maybe off topic, but ...

Last Saturday my brother-in-law and father-in-law flew down to Charlotte from PVD (for race week, of course) and said that on their flight a gentleman with a dog on a regular leash (not a seeing eye dog) had a set of three seats near them in coach. The FAs made a big fuss over him -- celebrity? Anyone know ... it seems odd to me that a dog would be allowed in the cabin, unless it was a drug sniffer moving to a new base.

They said the gentleman was large, and elderly, perhaps a veteran.

Just curious what you might think,
-Ed.

D-O Double Gizzle

A few years ago I met my sister's PIT-STL flight at the gate. I was running a little late, but she said that Snoop Dogg (actually I think he was still Snoop Doggy Dogg at that point) and his entourage had taken up basically the entire F cabin. Apparently Dogg and his crew did obey the no-smoking signs.

I know I've mentioned this before, but on many occasions, I've sat near the honorable Gov. Rendel on PHL PIT flights. While mayor, he flew in coach, but as Gov., he was up front. Seems like a nice guy and was always nice to the people next to him.

Years ago, on a flight from PHL-DEN, I sat across in 1C from Tug McGraw, Mrs Tug (#2) and a younger son. He was going to the All Star Game to play with his 'band', but his DIL, Faith Hill was singing the national anthem for one of the leagues. He was pleased to hear that I had bought his children's book 'Lumpy' for my nephew. He said I was the only person other than his Mum whom he actually knew had bought one. He taught me that a dollar bill is great for cleaning glasses.

I can't speak to this story, but there have been previous stories of Tony Randall or Jack Lemmon (I can't remember exactly who right now) who would buy two F seats, one for him and one for the dog on some transcontinental flights. Apparently it was quite common for whatever his travel was at the time and the flight crews that knew them even kept a few dog biscuits for the very well-behaved pet. I read that story on Flyertalk but can't find a link right now.

I was standing at the US ticket counter at LAX one day a few years ago and happened to look to my right to see actor Charles Durning a few positions away. I was surprised to note that he wasn't terribly tall. Though why I thought he might be tall kind of escapes me. Anyway, we were both in First Class on the flight to Pittsburgh and, while waiting outside the lav, I found myself staring down the aisle at him. He looked away and when I realized I was staring at him I was really embarassed.

I used to see James Van Der Beek fairly regularly commuting LAX-CLT-ILM when he was starring in "Dawson's Creek."

I have seen Chuck Schumer, the NY senator, in US in F a few times as well.

Never have seen any Senator on Amtrak, even the Acela Express.

Thumbs up

My all time favorite was the venerable Mr. Rogers -- bumped into him in PIT (remember that place??) in the trainride from terminal to baggage claim. He was exceedingly kind and gracious to everyone in the car.

Arlen Specter and Joe Biden routinely take Acela Express to Philadelphia and Wilmington, respectively.

A few weeks ago On LAX-PIT, I sat two rows behind Jerome "the bus" Bettis in F. This was only a few weeks after the Steeler Super Bowl victory (late Feb.). The Pittsburgh based crew and some pax were, not surprisingly, all over him for autographs etc., but only after we landed as it was a redeye and he slept the whole way.

There have been other minor celebs, especially out of LAX.

Recently, I caught a later departure of the Acela from Washington and I wondered why the mass amount of Amtrak police hanging around the conference room at the Club Acela Washington, DC.

Even before they called boarding for the Acela the Amtrak police escorted Senator Biden to the train.
