Mileage Upgrades -- everyone pays (eff. 23 April 2014)

Fees no longer waived for US Preferreds:

Mileage upgrades
As of April 23, 2014, the mileage upgrade fee will now apply to Preferred members on US Airways flights. The fee will continue to be waived for fares purchased in Y or B.
Little by little -- heck, a lot by a lot -- they are squeezing the fun out of the game. And just when I decided that collecting miles and using them for upgrades was the coming strategy !

I was about to post this, but you beat me to it.

Not liking the recent changes. I was planning on redeeming for a RTW award ticket once the accounts merged. Looks like redemption options are dwindling fast.

At least CP still get the redeposit fee waived, but I am sure that will go eventually...

The spirit of US aviation

Glad I didn't give US much business anyway.

What's particularly galling here is that the US benefit is going away -- presumably to match AA -- but the copays remain as much as 3x those on AA. E.g., if flying BOS-PHX-SEA (admittedly an outlier) the US upgrade is 17.5k+$225, versus 15k+$75 on AA.

And no reciprocity, even.

Unfortunately, that is one of the few things we can probably still count on.

This is upsetting! I got the email just now as well. That's BS. You should straight up be able to use miles to upgrade, not have to pay another fee on top of the award travel fee. $150 upgrade fee? Jeezus.

Lame. I'm feeling better about shifting my status chase to AS this year. The hole in that is not being able to credit my US flights, which I still see a lot of up and down the east coast. But going west from BOS, I can fly AS or AA and credit those.

It's a shame. US treated me really well for years. But as a Silver, I do use miles to upgrade my TCONs, and that will add up. On the converse, BOS-SAN on AS usually clears as a complimentary, even for bottom tier, and that route is where a lot of my mileage comes from in the first place.

This one really sucks. It's been great to be able to lock in a transcon upgrade for 10K miles - (and be 99% sure you can do it before even booking).

Say you want to upgrade two legs of one trip, and the fee is $50, will it cost $100 to upgrade both of them?
