For a dummy HNL-PHX-xxx-PHL-TLV booking (22799 base miles with routing through EWR/BOS) with the 50% gold bonus I got offered x2 for $599 and x3 for $1999. x3 would net 102,591 miles total or 68394 instant at 2,9 cpm. (which is a bad deal)

I wonder how the amounts are calculated, so this can be optimized as much as possible. (maybe the cut off is 20000 miles for a single booking before jumping up to $1999?)

And wondering if taking advantage of the e-savers and buying the x3 could be cheaper than buying the miles themselves. (and not flying in this case).

If you are on the verge of moving up a tier and getting a bigger bonus, this may have the unintended side effect of delaying purchases ;-)

I got an email about this today:
Speed your way to an award ticket
Double or triple your miles with Dividend Miles Multiplier multiplier

Now you can double or triple your miles every time you fly for as little as $9.

First, go to usairways.com and book a flight. Make sure you're logged in (or that you enter your Dividend Miles number when you enter your ‘passenger information'). When you get to the last step, you'll see Dividend Miles Multiplier and we'll estimate the total miles for your trip.

Here's how we calculate your miles:

Flight miles (includes segment minimums for Preferred members & all Shuttle flights)
+ Class-of-service bonus (if it applies)
+ Preferred bonus miles (if it applies)
= Total miles

The learn more link takes me to this:

Dividend Miles Multiplier
Double or triple your miles with Dividend Miles Multiplier

Now you can double or triple your miles every time you fly for as little as $9 on usairways.com.
Here's how it works.

First, we estimate the total miles for your trip:

Flight miles (includes segment minimums for Preferred members & all Shuttle flights)
+ Class-of-service bonus (if it applies)
+ Preferred bonus miles (if it applies)
= Total miles

Then, with Dividend Miles Multiplier you can double or triple your total miles for as little as $9.
Keep in mind...

* The miles you buy with Dividend Miles Multiplier don't count towards Preferred status.
* Dividend Miles Multiplier only shows up when there is at least one Dividend Miles member on the itinerary.
* You'll only see Dividend Miles Multiplier when you're booking travel on usairways.com.
* Multiplier miles post immediately after you pay for your trip. Your actual flight miles still show up after you've completed your trip.

Oddly enough so did I. I wonder why it took US so long to send out this round?

If I were CP and the cost remained the same (doubtful, I'm sure), then it may be an even better deal. So find the cheapest MR's available and you could come out a winner.

As a CP I expected the cost to be the same for the same trip. not so. I actually pay more for the extra miles. This is after choosing a 1500$ ticket from PHX-CLT-BOS-PHL-LHR-PHL-BOS-PHX At least on UA it is a simple 3 cpm calculation!

calculation of price

I've done some checking on the amount of miles and prices offered. The total amount of EXTRA miles you would get with x2 or x3 is processed like this:
- <20000: 2 cpm, rounded up to next "sales number": $9, $19, $29, etc.. up to $399 (with presumably larger gaps between these numbers). It could be a bit off on the lower end, eg 1500 miles sells for $29, not $39.
- between 20000 and 50000: $599
- >50000: $1999: probably a failsafe price to make sure this is not mis-used.

SFO-PHL-TLV makes a nice run as a GP: this would net 24856 miles. x2 price: $599 for 24856, x3 price: $599 for 49712 (no that price is not a typo). That's close to 1,2 cpm.

For any itinerary that would bring the x3 miles between 20000 and 29950, the x2 offer will actually work out cheaper.

Planning a trip SFO-PHL-TLV and back, got offered x2 @ $599 and x3 at the same price $599. would net ~49500 extra miles for $600 is about 1.2cpm, sounds like a good deal, even better than the double miles I bought last December.
Any thoughts?

Edit:

Can this be combined with the JS10 promotion?
This will give me about 16K more miles which also counts towards Elite...

Total price (including original ticket) is going to be about 2.2cpm of which over 30K goes to Elite

What's JS10? I don't memorize promo codes. Is that the double preferred qualifying miles promo?

Yes. Just to point out for anyone else that the double preferred miles in that promo are not considered in the 2x or 3x multiplier calculation. That only considers the base miles plus any preferred and class of service bonuses.

SFO-PHL-TLV-PHL-SFO is 16584 miles. You will get this:

16584 + 50% GP bonus = 24876.
DM Multiplier: 24876 x 3 = 74628.
Add the DPQM's: 74628 + 16584 = 91212

Grand total 91212, of which 33168 (16584 base + 16584 DPQM) are PQM's. Give or a take a handful of miles for variables such as US' great circle calculator and the 50% bonus on flights that may earn an odd number of base miles.

I did the x2 on a trip recently and received the x2 from paying as well as the double miles promotion. Worked out quite nicely.

So total was x3 or x4?
Can you post numbers (including price/elite etc.)?

Question about this "multiplier" option

I'm sure this has been asked but I couldn't find anyone asking it this directly. I have never seen this option, no matter how many times I choose a flight that is more miles than what I have. Am I not doing this right?

1) Go to Award Travel tab
2) Type in some destinations
3) In the calendar, check a couple of options where it's more points than I have
4) Select the flight times for flights that are more points than I have

I ALWAYS get a pop-up that makes me feel like an iditot saying "You don't have enough miles for this transaction". Yeah no **** I don't have enough miles, I'm trying to take advantage of your seemingly dumb promotion!

Any advice from anyone? Thanks in advance!

you misunderstood the promotion

it's when you book a regular ticket, you can get x2 or x3 miles for the trip for $x amount of dollars

Why yes I did misunderstand the promotion. It was sent with an email on doubling shared miles, so my mind went to that direction. Makes sense now. Thanks lksf! Although in my defense:

"Double or triple your miles with Dividend Miles Multiplier
Now you can double or triple your miles every time you fly for as little as $9 on usairways.com"

Doesn't really paint the whole picture there...

2.5 cpm is not a very good deal. You can often get miles for 1.875 cpm (+a fee) during the sales.
