US Airways to Begin Fort Lauderdale-Bermuda Service
Thursday April 3, 11:01 am ET

ARLINGTON, Va., April 3 /PRNewswire-FirstCall/ -- US Airways announced today that it has received both U.S. and foreign government approval to begin seasonal service between Fort Lauderdale, Fla., and Bermuda, further expanding its service to the island.

The new nonstop roundtrip service will begin on June 14, 2003, and will operate each Saturday using 120-seat Airbus A319 aircraft, with seating for 12 First Class passengers and 108 Coach Class passengers. Flights will depart Fort Lauderdale at 12:05 p.m., and will arrive in Bermuda at 3:47 p.m. Return flights will depart Bermuda at 11:25 a.m., and will arrive in Fort Lauderdale at 12:58 p.m. The seasonal service will continue through Aug. 30, 2003.

"As the world's premier travel destination, Florida is pleased to welcome US Airways as it links the beautiful waters of Fort Lauderdale and Bermuda," said Florida Governor Jeb Bush. "This nonstop service will be important in building both business and leisure ties between Florida and Bermuda, and I thank US Airways for expanding its presence in the Sunshine State."

"Fort Lauderdale will mark our sixth U.S. gateway to Bermuda, an important benchmark for US Airways and South Florida," said Douglas D. Leo, US Airways vice president of international. "I would like to thank Governor Bush for his diligent efforts in support of this new service, which will greatly benefit his constituents."

US Airways currently offers nonstop roundtrip service between Bermuda and Philadelphia, Washington Reagan National and New York LaGuardia airports. Boston-Bermuda service will begin on May 4, 2003, and seasonal service from Charlotte, N.C., will resume on June 8, 2003.

US Airways has introduced a sale fare on the new nonstop Fort Lauderdale- Bermuda flights, offering customers a roundtrip ticket price of $495 on the route. Under this sale, tickets must be purchased by April 11, 2003, for travel on Saturdays, June 14 through August 30, 2003. The sale fare is available on usairways.com, through US Airways Reservations, and travel agencies.

Tickets must be purchased at least seven days before departure. A seven- day minimum stay is required, and a 30-day maximum stay is allowed. Tickets become nonrefundable 24 hours after making the initial reservation, and under certain conditions may be changed prior to the departure of each flight segment for a minimum $100 fee. If changes are not made prior to midnight of the departure date of each flight, the entire remaining ticket will have no further value.

Fares do not include a federal excise tax of $3, which will be imposed on each flight segment of the itinerary. A flight segment is defined as a takeoff and a landing. Fares do not include up to $18 in airport passenger facility charges (PFCs) where applicable, and the September 11th Security Fee of up to $10 per itinerary. Seats are limited and may not be available on all flights or times. Schedules are subject to change without notice. Other conditions may apply.

US Airways is also offering an introductory special of double Dividend Miles for travel between Fort Lauderdale and Bermuda, June 14 through July 31, 2003. Already rumored/reported, but still an uncharacteristic move for our airline.

How does this work logistically. I would think the same plane would fly there and back , but judging from the way the schedule is posted -it doesn't work out that way

As it stands now, the airplane will originate at one of the hubs and fly to FLL. From FLL it will got to BDA and from there operate the segment to BOS.

The flight is partially subsidized by the Bermudan government and the airport is waiving landing fees. Originally, it was going to be MIA-BDA, but, as I said, FLL said they would waive fees.

Miami has been yearning for a non-stop to Bermuda for a long time coming. Look for this flight to see increased frequency and likely go year-round, which are USAirways' intentions. Not only is thier leisure traffic, but there is business traffic on this route, especially with Tyco Corporation, a billion-dollar corporation with thier HQ's in Bermuda for tax purposes, but all thier real operations out of South Florida.

Why not? Some pharmaceutical company had enough clout to sway the use of A330 on PHL-MAN.

Well, they lost billions last year, people are angry at former management for stealing profits in the form of rigged incentive plans, etc.

And then there's Tyco. ;-)

Seriously though they arent in great shape. Let's just say I dont have a lot of faith. Then again, misery loves company.
