UNDER CONSTRUCTION

NOTE: The 15 A330-200 (with Rolls Royce Trent 700 engines) are being retained and updated. (The nine Pratt & Whitney equipped A330-300s have been scheduled for retirement (return to lessor at lease end) by late 2018 due to poor "fit" in the AA fleet (link).) The A330-200s will continue, however, and the launch of the retrofitted A330-200 will see
  • 20 Zodiac "Envoy" type Business seats in a 1-2-1 layout (1 blocked for pilot rest)
  • 21 Premium Economy (B/E Aerospace) seats in a 2-3-2 layout
  • 50 Main Cabin Extra seats (same seats as Y, just greater seat pitch) 2-4-2 (2 blocked for customers requiring customer assistance)
  • Main Cabin / Economy seats also 2-4-2
  • Ku band satellite based Panasonic WiFi
  • Individual personal entertainment screens for every seat
  • Seat power
  • Noise reduction headsets - Bose in Business, others for Premium Economy

Premium Economy and extended Main Cabin Extra has been installed on the A330-200 fleet. Until 15 Jan 2018, PE seats were available to Elites as MCE on those aircraft with PE; PE are available for sale on that date.

CLT-MAD is a 767 Seasonal Flight. Your January flight is Via PHL, which is usually a 333 year round. Periodically, 333s are/will be taken out of service for Envoy Suite installation and other upgrades during late 2011/2012. PHL-MAD is currently scheduled to be replaced with a 332 from Nov 29, 2011 through end of March 2012. All 332s have the Envoy Suites. Your CLT-PHL-CLT flight will be on a domestic aircraft - unless you're fortunate to snag a 757 ferry flight.

Can't find a single post on the best seats in economy. Your thoughts?

Does Row 25 have extra leg room? Seat map appears to show Row 21 - 23 - 25 on the left side and Row 21 - 25 on the right side with the intermediate row numbers missing. Only the 24 row number appears to be missing in the middle section of coach.

There are also 767s flying CLT-PHL.

Just got off peak Envoy award (LAX-PHL-MAD) for my wife & I. Bought 100K miles (buy 50K, get 50K free) and got row 1 suites (middle 2) on the PHL-MAD legs. Traveling in mid Jan 2012 & got Sat outbound, Sunday return. (7 days in MAD).

Couldn't see burning 200K AA miles when I got Envoy for 110K (55K x 2 for US Airways CC holder). Looking forward to the lie flat beds! ^

Used to be Chairman's about 10 yrs ago. (pre-merger).

Did MUC-PHL on the new A332 aircraft (N285AY delivered March 10).

Nice seat, although I was underwhelmed considering the massive praise the new US envoy seat gets on FT.

First impressions:

Very spacey, although the angled herringbone layout takes some getting used to as you instinctively sit facing towards the flightdeck and not at an angle to the window.

Also I had a tough time talking to my colleague across the aisle as he had to crane his neck. Others sitting in the middle two seats had to bend forward to keep eye contact.

A few sad things that right away caught my attention:

I know US Air loves to use duct tape and is not famous for attention to detail, but surely line maintenance in PHL can spend a few minutes to care for their premium cabin?

Regarding the cabin its interesting to see how different the layout was compared to other A330 I've flown on:

- on lav up front shared by crew and envoy (normally A330/340 have one dedicated lav for crew right behind the flight deck and 1-2 pax lavs after the entrance or no access for pax to the flight crew lav).

- heavy fake wood panelling (who in their right mind chose that color scheme?)

- air vents in the overhead PSU (never ever saw that on any A330/340 the past 10-12 years)

- massive 'cup'/bottle holder for a biig water bottle:

- interesting airshow showing locations where various ships sank (??)

The amenity kit was nice:

The service was quick (meal and cocktail choice taken before departure) and the entire service including coffee was done about 120-140min after takeoff . Servings very generous (for European standards) and the service was more Applebee's style rather than the Capital Grille style it was probably designed to be.

The mojito was delivered in DIY style (I asked for one drink BTW)

Appetizer:

Main course:

Dessert:

Espresso:

Second Meal/Snack:

All in all it was a positive experience, the IFE pretty neat (the system remembered the album/playlist I picked in the music section and played that whenever I was not watching a movie or tv show) but with a very limited movie and TV show collections, 80% of which didn't interest me. But thats me.

The super duper flat seat didn't suit me for some reason. First of all I couldn't get it to a full flat position and then I uncomfortably felt the bumps where the backrest and footrest meet the seat cushion. I didn't mind as it was a dayflight.

I planned on revisiting that topic in detail on the redeye back to MUC but thanks to bad weather in PHL and Wisconsin Air massively delaying my feeder flight I got rebooked onto LH C for the return.

I would definitely do it again.

Funny - instinctively most people go to the front for the lav... There is actually a 2nd lav for Envoy in the rear right, past the galley and immediately in front of the first rows of Y. Invariably, it has been cleaner and more available on the flights I've taken, despite the occasional Y pax sneaking past the curtain.

Seat 1h good or bad

Hi, flying on the new envoy a330-200. Seat 1h is open. I have never flown on this plane, but looking at the seat map I am a bit concerned that people will hang out in front of the seat. Anyone have any experience with this seat. Should I take it or grab something else?

They won't hang out in front of your seat. I like row 1. But I believe it is not good for very tall people from what I remember.

The seat is good and very private (as you're on the non-lav side). The "downside": light from the galley (a lot more annoying for night-flights). Also, IIRC, the IFE screen is mounted slightly differently, so you can't tilt it around as much.

I'm headed MAD-PHL-BOS on the old config 330 in Envoy. I upgraded my wife and daughter as well, so we are in Row 1. My question for this thread having flown the 330-200 is that the cabin is so private does it make sense to try and upgrade them on the BOS-PHL-BCN portion?

My daughter is two (please don't start the toddlers in Envoy argument.. she's been on almost 30 flights already in the F cabin) and wondering if there is any workable seat to put a family of three in.

I certainly enjoy the cabin much more than the old seats, but it might not be family friendly...

Thoughts?
