US Airways / Barclays $99.00 Companion Certificates

As indicated in post #1254 & 1255, the last date to book has been EXTENDED
to October 12, use by 31 Dec 2015, on AA.

US Airways Companion Certificate

Purchase a roundtrip ticket of $250 (before any taxes) or more with your US Airways Dividend Miles MasterCard and have up to two companions fly with you for $99 each (plus tax on the amount of the equivalent full-fare ticket).

The price of the full-fare ticket is determined by the lowest "bucket" for which two Y seats are available if you have one companion and for which three Y seats are available if you have two companions.

Systemwide blackout dates (2015):
Jan 3, 4, Feb 13, Mar 15, 20, 22, 26, 27, 29, Apr 2, 3, 6, 12, May 21, 22, Jun 25, 26, Jul 5, 6, Oct 18, Nov 20, 29, 30, Dec 18, 19, 26, 27

Additional Blackout Dates for specific cities (2015):
- Jan 15 from Dallas
- Jan 29, 30 to Phoenix
- Feb 2, 3 from Phoenix
- Feb 13 to New Orleans
- Feb 18 from New Orleans
- Apr 7 from Indianapolis
- Apr 30, May 1 to Louisville
- May 3 from Louisville

Routing:
Certificate valid for use when travel originates in the contiguous 48 United States for service to the contiguous 48 states or Canada.
Not valid for travel to Alaska, Hawaii, Puerto Rico, Caribbean, Mexico, Central/South America, or Europe. Not valid on stopovers, open jaws, open returns, or circle trips.

Valid Carrier
Valid on flights operated by US Airways and US Airways Express. Not valid on codeshare flights operated by partner airlines such as United.
Valid for travel on American flights with a departure date after October 18, 2015.

Dividend Miles Accrual and Upgrades
Travel is eligible for Dividend Miles accrual, accrual in other airline programs not permitted. Dividend Miles Preferred upgrades are permitted subject to the rules of the upgrade being used. All Dividend Miles Terms and Conditions apply.

Additional guidelines for booking
1) You must call US Airways reservations; you cannot book this type of ticket on line.
2) The certificate must be used by YOU, you cannot have someone else and two companions use it.
3) You must book you and any companions at the same time as you on the same routing and PNR as you. One companion cannot break off and go a different direction for one segment.
4) You must use your US Airways Mastercard to make the purchase.
5) You must mail in the certificate after you make the purchase. The address is printed on the certificate (US Airways office in Winston-Salem, NC). (They insist that you retain proof of mailing within 24 hours of booking)
6) There should NOT be a telephone booking fee for this as you can't book this type of fare any other way.
7) It should be possible to split the PNR after booking (this may be beneficial for those hoping for an upgrade as a preferred member, or if the card holder can no longer travel on the days originally booked) YMMV.
8) Any changes to the tickets after booking are subject to the current change fees listed on the US Airways website.
9) Ticket must be booked at least 14 days in advance of travel. (Agents may try to tell you that it needs 15 days because the day of travel is not counted. Even supervisor will insist on it. Do not buy that. Hang up and redial. You need usual 14 days advance booking)
10) You can cancel within 24 hours of booking and you will retain the certificate if you have not mailed it. But they will not make any changes to reservations even within 24 hours due to the third sentance under the Change/Refunds section in the T&C.

Your assumption is correct.

So I have another question (my cert is at work so can't read the terms). Wiki on this thread says the first ticket (for which I'm paying market price) must be in Y fare code. Searching USAir, I'm only finding S and N fares. Y would be the full economy fare. Can that be right? If so, then it's not even worth using the cert.

Nothing such in my experience. I guess Y is used in the wiki to mean Coach class: any round trip fare over $250 in Coach.

Mrs. Arrek recently used her companion cert for herself, me, and another person. She's just found out that she has a last minute business trip and won't be able to fly the return. Is she able to not fly the return or will everyone's itinerary be cancelled? Should we split the PNR?

Thanks

If you read a few pages of this thread, you'll see that this question has been asked many, many -- many -- times, and that the consensus answer would appear to be that once the tickets are issued, they're the same as any other tickets. So you can do what you want, i.e., either no show the Mrs. or split the PNR into two PNRs. There would appear to be the theoretical possibility of "getting caught," but this seems not to happen in practice.

My only personal experience is that the actual up front ticketing process is exceedingly manual -- i.e., zero computer checks -- and so this answer makes sense to me.

This is what I get out of this thread, anyway. Someone else may have a different take.

FYI, everyone, spouse received his card about 3 weeks ago, made purchase, paid bill even before statement hit. My referral 10k points have posted to my account. Woohoo! His haven't posted yet.

Also, did you all receive your cc in your original packet or did it come later, after spend?

2015 Certificate Received

Just got my anniversary certificate. Here is the chronology I had:
1/6/15 - Statement closed including 10,000 Anniversary Miles
1/30/15 - $89 Annual Fee posted
2/7/15 - Certificate received in the mail

The cert is the same as the past - has the same blackout dates, restrictions, etc. as in the Wiki. Still says that travel must be on US Airways or US Airways Express.

BUT

While the lounge pass for me expires 12/31/15, her lounge pass doesn't expire until 12/31/16!

So check yours carefully!

Okay, so I'm looking to book w/ the companion cert for MEM-SJC. There is no routing whatsoever that is fully on us airways metal. All the routes have at least 1 AA leg. Do they bend on this sort of situation?

From all accounts in this thread, no.

Not sure how you're doing your search, but there are LOTS of matching flights. I'm guessing you simply don't want to stop in PHX after you've already backtracked to CLT. However, that's the way it has to be, as US only serves SJC from their western hub. If you'd prefer not to stop in both places, you could drive (or take a bus) to ATL and fly to PHX from there (and likely save $$, though I haven't priced it).

Or simply just fly to SFO

Yes, I'm aware that I could fly into SFO. I have specific reasons for wanting to fly to SJC.

Was using google.com/flights. I might've had it at 1-stop only routing b/c that's my default. But yeah, no way am I going to spend all that time backtracking (with 3 kids) and no way am I going to drive 7 hours to ATL. If it was just me, maybe. But I'll go back and check. Thanks.
