Hawaii interisland flight & luggage question

When checking in to a UA interisland flight from Kona to HNL for a mainland flight from HNL will my checking in the first point in Kona with my luggage go through to my final destination? ROC

Also would an hour between flight arrival and departure be sufficient if I am checked in with luggage?

thanks for your reply.

Do not count on being able to interline your bags....

You should be able to interline the bags (provided both flight groups are on the same PNR), but you will need to pay HA's bag fees - neither your UA ticket nor UA status will be of any help.

Given they will start to board the mainland flight 45 minutes before departure, an hour to connect is not very much. The roof-top wiki-wiki shuttle only comes around maybe every 15-20 minutes or so, otherwise, it's a long walk.

Out of curiosity, your post says a United interisland flight from KOA to HNL - are you sure it's really a UA flight? (I know they have OGG-KOA-ORD from time to time, but I don't recall KOA-HNL). I think everyone assumed you are on HA, but there are other carriers that operate this route.

Having done this successfully but with MUCH stress recently, I would suggest that an hour is cutting it pretty close. It certainly can be done, but there's not much room for error.

I can book the flight via UA with miles but the carrier is HA.. good to know that I need more time.
Basically if my flight is out of Koa around 5pm and arrival by 6pm for an 8pm flight I should have plenty of time, retrieve the luggage and check in to UA do we have to go through security again?

As mentioned above, as long as the ticket is on one PNR, you can (and should) check the bags through, but be prepared to pay the HA bag fees. That said, if you have 2 bags the fee is $35, while the day of departure upgrade (if available, and it usually is) is $50 and includes 2 bags and lounge access. So, something to consider. Do not exit secure area in HNL, go up a level to wiki wiki shuttle, or walk on the secure side (~ 15 mins)

You will need to clear the Ag inspection, which is not security - either you clear it before boarding the wiki wiki or clear it while walking between terminals.

Is there any chance you can switch to an earlier flight - 1hr is doable, but very tight and the later afternoon HA flights can be delayed - even a 20 minute delay might sink your connection.

I would definitely opt for a longer connection.

So HA charges the interisland rate for bags even when continuing on to the mainland (2x $17)? This is the part I've been trying to figure out for my itinerary home next week, LIH-HNL-ORD.

HA will charge the bag fee for flights they operate - the only exception are bags passed *to* HA from another carrier that did not collect a bag fee. When HA accepts bags at check-in, they will charge a fee (for non status coach pax) regardless of whether they fly the bags to terminating point or pass them *to* another carrier, regardless of that carrier's policies....and regardless of which airline your ticket is plated on.

thanks for the replies and information needed.
Looks like husband & I will need to retrieve our luggage.. not a big deal for the $17 baggage fee for HA flight this is a different flight reservation I have yet to make since the dates are still not available- Jan 16 , 2014
My airport arrival time is very flexible from KOA I can leave as early as I want.
I was shooting for 5 pm flight ( 40 min flight)
The HNL flight home is in first class with a departure time of 8:10pm

1. As OP is on different PNR's, he really needs to allow time as he is not seen as a connecting pax. Any delay for any reason causing him to miss his UA flight is on his nickel, including overnight @HNL.

2. If OP were on a single PNR, HA would be bound under DOT rules by the charges levied for the first segment marketing carrier. Presuming a RT outbound from the mainland, that would be the first segment. If you are forced to pay the fees because the system is far from perfect between carriers, you can recover them after the itinerary is complete (under the theory that arguing the fine points of DOT rules with counter agents is not worth the effort). Just pay with a CC.

On a single PNR that was my understanding too. Luckily I'm only on a UA codeshare HNL-KOA (where my bags should have already been checked through) so I wont need to deal with it on my trip.

+1 on not having the argument with clueless agents, I wasted a load of time on Copa in Costa Rica this year (and wound up reclaiming the money when back in the US) and again in NZ when they claimed (incorrectly) that the ticketing carrier (NZ's) rules applied even though my first segment from JFK was on UA metal (and marketed flight number) and I was under UA's 1k fee regime. In the second case I had the print out from UA with my baggage allowance and the guy finally caved.

On a single PNR it may be worth printing out your eTicket with the baggage allowance on it to help with any arguments.

If you collect you bags in HNL, you WILL have to clear both security and ag inspection again. Ag inspection is painless. Interisland terminal to mainland departure check-in is 5 minutes for me, but could take 10 minutes depending on shape of people and amount of luggage. I'd allow at least 45-60 minutes to wait for luggage, trudge to main terminal, re-check, re-clear security and ag,arrive to gate. If you arrive 6pm to HNL, you'll have plent of time.
