United Airlines: 472 job cuts in Newark
Quote:
United Airlines has announced plans to lay off 472 workers at Newark Liberty International Airport in March.
The airline, which completed its acquisition of Continental Airlines 10 months ago, reported the layoffs in a letter to the New Jersey Department of Labor and Workforce Development.
I know UA lost some gates here due to AA planning to lease them to Virgin America instead of UA, but would that account for a layoff of so many airport employees? Is there something else in play for this many layoffs?

United Airlines yesterday said it expects to lay off 472 workers at Newark Liberty International Airport as part of a job outsourcing at a cargo facility, according to Rahsaan Johnson, a spokesman for United.

United must think that because the operations are running so smoothly there that they do not need all the extra staffing.
I'd like to see some restructuring of the CS and GA at EWR. Maybe if there were some layoff in that area, the remaining employees would realize that it's time to get to work.

If it ever comes down to this, I hope they will lay-off people according to historical performance metrics where the ones with F/unsatisfactory/below expectations/whatever it is called will be the first to go. Not by seniority.

That would be wonderful but alas that's not how it works in America w the airline industry. Other industries, yes but the employees at UA know they have the airlines by the balls when it comes to their behavior. They can lose their jobs due to cost cutting or restructuring but very rarely because of how well they do their jobs. It's a real shame cuz a relatively new employee, who has great CS skills, likes his/her job and understands that they are there to serve the customer will still lose their job every time before some veteran who hates the company, hates us (the customers) and hates life itself
Did anyone read FWAAA's post? This is nothing to do with passenger-carrying operations or flight crew. No flight crew are affected (since UA doesn't operate any cargo aircraft) and nothing do do with EWR-PHL flights. Nor is it a judgement on the efficiency of UA's passenger-facing operation in EWR.

Yes, I read FWAAA's post. I just added the comment that they could also lay off some of the passenger-faciing personnel and they would not be missed.
