April 2013 Market Cuts

Just saw these routes are going the way of the dinosaur:

LAX-TUL
ORD-SJU
EWR-PHL
IAD-PNS
IAD-MHT
IAH-CID

Thanks Jeff!

Ord-sju, I guess they cant compete with AA. I fly this route teice a year. Via IAH, which Jeff thinks people will do adds 4 hours to my trip. AA will get me now.

The issue is connecting flows. A lot of the ORD-SJU traffic is connections. West Coasters are better served via IAH which wasn't an option before, and East Coasters are better served by IAD and EWR.

Just like some of the flights ex-IAH no longer make sense in a combined UA-CO, some of the flights that worked ex-ORD no longer make sense in a combined UA-CO.

honestly, dropping all four of these routes (ESPECIALLY EWR-PHL) is ridiculous. for the Wilmington DE segment of traffic, ZVF-EWR is in no way equivalent to PHL-EWR, and i certainly dont forsee Jeffy adding ILG-EWR/IAD anytime soon

Just out of curiosity, which one(s) are you most upset about? I'm thinking LAX-TUL and IAH-CID won't be a huge blow to the system, and not making any money anyway (probably like all of them). If they want to redirect that money to refurbish the planes or clubs, I'm ok with that.

Add IAD to ABE to the list too.

one can do the train as a connection with equivalent amenities and higher reliability. About 25% of those EWR-PHL had been canceled on a daily basis...

Lots of local traffic on this route. AA gets most of it and WN will start it soon.

IAD-MHT is disappointing to me. At least there is still IAD-SJU. IAH-SJU on a 738 with the rock-hard seats is just painful. It's absolutely AA for me.

US is on DCA-PNS now so I'd image that has siphoned a fair bit of traffic away from UA's service. Probably a fairly thin market to begin with.

As for EWR-PHL - US is still on the route (and still *A for now). Of course, I don't know if .bomb will sell connections involving US there or not.

Well so much for the value of having east coast hubs.

The fact is that these routes presumably don't support the aircraft. If they're losing money or the aircraft can be put to better use or the gate slots used for more profitable routes, why wouldn't UA?

People take this stuff way too personally. It's a business and it sells tickets. More people paying higher fares = more flights.

United is losing 10 slots at EWR it leased from American Eagle on March 30th, so I imagine there's a bit of a crunch there ... dropping EWR-PHL frees up 3 of them.

This deal is also where Virgin America is getting the slots for SFO/LAX-EWR ... I wonder if that is why UA responded so aggressively.

It seems that everyone has been downsizing MHT recently. Ever since WN started BOS, they've been downsizing MHT. All other airlines have followed suit.
