How Far Will / Should United Go For Weather?

Apologies if this is already answered, but my flight this morning from EWR-IAD just got cancelled. Itinerary continues on to JNB and CPT later this afternoon.

There don't look to be any flights from the NY-area that will get us down to IAD in time, so I have 2 questions:
1) Will the itinerary get cancelled if we "miss" the first flight, or if we can make it down to IAD in time (fight to JNB isn't until 5:40 this afternoon), will we be ok?
2) Will United reimburse for any other modes of transportation (e.g. Amtrak, or even gas if we have to drive it ourselves?)

I'm a 1K, flying with my wife on 2 award tickets in business class the whole way.

There's no "fare difference" for an award to S. Africa whether you begin in NYC or WAS. Why not just call UA and ask them to drop the domestic segment that's cancelled so you don't lose the rest of the trip, then make your own way down to IAD?

Yeah I just realized that myself - so that part is an easy fix.

The real question now is going to be whether UA reimburses (even partially), the $350-$400 it's going to cost in Amtrak tickets and taxi fare to get there!

Probably not.

Can they get you seats on the morning JFK-JNB flight instead??

No bookable award seats available (though SAA does have them for sale) - any specific rule or policy I could reference to encourage them to make it work?

Update: NM, it seemed like they were going to try to make it work (agent was on hold with SAA) - but given that we're actually in NJ right now, didn't seem like we'd be able to make it to JFK in time.

UA could route you through Europe to SA.

Typically award space does not HA e to be a available during irrops to get rebooked. Usually you should be put in the corresponding revenue class (though most likely will not earn miles) F,J,Y. YMMV though

Don't bank on much help. I spent over an hr on the phone at midnight last night dealing with a cancelation and also lost a transcon upgrade out of the deal. I joked with the agent that I must have been on SMI/J's naughty list this year. Fortunately as a PMUA agent, she saw the humor.

If they can't re-book you out of JFK or through another routing today, consider a one way car rental from EWR to IAD. It would be easier and quicker than AMTRAK and taxi's

USAir LGA-DCA ?.......a lot easier to get from DCA to IAD than driving all the way down from EWR to IAD.

DL runs a shuttle to DCA pretty frequently too out of LGA if you need to buy your own way there. going to need to book a towncar or do a one way rental though, it's roughly 30-50 minutes away depending on weather/traffic.

Second the routing through Europe idea. Plenty of LH flights departing ex-NYC, or you can fly on TK. (or TAP or SAS!)

1. UA isn't going to do anything to compensate you in WX, especially not for train tickets, car rental and the like.

2. Fastest and easiest way to IAD from EWR is a one-way car rental. Amtrak seems convenient, but it drops you at Union Station with a cab ride out to IAD. WX in the DC area is just fine right now. If the roads to the north are OK, I would grab this and run.

3. Getting rebooked onto another carrier is much easier at the airport than over the phone. Airport agents can see the line below you and just do stuff which they probably should not. Phone agents are more likely to follow the rules. On the other hand, given massive IRROPS in the northeast, grabbing revenue seats for awards from another carrier (*A or not) may be tough because each carrier already has its own pax to take care of. This process also takes time.

Why can't you just rebook for tomorrow morning from JFK to JNB? Why does it have to be today?
