I am UA Gold - so obviously I should be able to choose E+.
Anyone experienced this before?
Call UA up on the phone and make sure that your segments are split. You should then be able to choose your seats on MEL-SYD and SYD-LAX online. Sometimes the computer gets confused about these "direct" flights.

This.
The problem is the direct flight, not status or anything else. Agents should be able to split the segments and solve that for you.
The segments show as seperate segments on the website, but I can only choose regular economy on the SYD-LAX part.
Was there by chance a schedule change last night?
If so call or try again as it takes several hours to select seats after the change.
Anyway, try calling again!
Unfortunately I have had this problem since I booked the ticket 2 months ago.
I am now being told I will only be able to ask for those E+ seats at the airport.
Its a fatal flaw in their system that hasnt been fixed yet.
How many times have you inquired?
Surly a supervisor can override something and get you seats on such a long flight.
Call em back and politely ask them to elevate your situation to a higher authority! The pat answer when something doesn't work properly is, "You'll just have to wait!" Don't accept this nonsense, but be polite and firm!
Good luck!
I had the exact same problem on the exact same flight.
I called, and got it straightened out. The rep that answered couldn't choose the E+ seat either, she had to call someone else. Took 25+ minutes, but it worked eventually.
Are we certain that there is E+ available for selection on OP's specific flight segment? As others note, it's a long flight, has a lot of elites and it's a flight on which many are more than wiling to and probably long ago paid for E+.
The fact that OP is eligible for E+, doesn't mean it exists.
