Can I get 2 tickets for myself in 2 cabins on one flight?

I'm going on an international MR soon to achieve 1K. I got a coach ticket for the running, but I'd like to sit up front. There's saver award space available for F seats. Can I buy two tickets, and use them both on the flight? Scanning the Y for miles, and scanning the F for the seat?

Very interesting concept, and I'm interested in any responses about whether it's technically possible. But wouldn't the cost of a miles+copay upgrade to C be cheaper than the value of the miles used for F redemption anyway?

1) My ticket is an L fare (Y class), so an upgrade to biz would be $600 + 30k miles.
2) A saver ticket in F is $21 + 70k miles (or 60k if it's to biz class)

People have asked about this before. Usually it goes like this: "There is no upgrade inventory on my outbound. But there's saver F availability. Can't I just book the saver F award and scan both boarding passes?"

I've never seen someone telling about a time where they tried this and it worked. If they have successfully convinced a gate agent to scan both boarding passes, they've been very quiet about it.

The UA systems do not deal well with a passenger showing up twice on a flight (they tend to cancel one or the other of a "duplicate" reservation). If you do this, you might miss out on mileage credit and have your downline segments cancelled. This is not a supported operation.

If you go ahead with it, let us know how it goes, though!

mherdeg – If what you say is true, that the answer is truly unknown, then I'm surprised nobody has tried this at least on a short domestic one-way, just to see if it works.

It's a violation of UA's booking and ticketing policy, I suspect that you'll have difficulty finding a GA willing to load you on the same flight twice, and if United's flight firming system is working properly, it will automatically cancel one of your reservations.

Get the F seat or your "cello". The just trade seats.

Buy your award ticket in a name other than your own, i.e. EXTRA TONEDABASS. Use your Y ticket to get through security, ask GA to scan both.

If GA won't scan both, find some poor person stuck in a middle E- seat and offer them your aisle E+ boarding pass.

Just make sure they're on the last segment of their trip

Or, if you are evil, just board with your Y boarding pass, then take your F seat, then when the non-rev shows up to take your F seat, adopt an astonished look while showing your boarding pass with assigned seat and convincing the FA and GA that they must have just mis-scanned your BP.

OR... save yourself some time and use elite maximizer and don't buy the Y ticket at all.

That is the worst advice I ever heard.

This and all of the other ideas so far mentioned would not work. Such as EXTRASEAT has to be the same cabin

No one has ever reported that it has worked. That either means that (1) it doesn't work or (2) it works but they're keeping it on the down low because it's against UA's rules and it's not supposed to work.

Giving someone else your other boarding pass is a pretty bad idea for them, could work out OK for you. That other person "stuck in economy minus who got your economy plus boarding pass" will be counted as never having boarded the flight, and their downline flights will all be cancelled. Bad times for them.

I wouldn't consider this question authoritatively answered in the other threads.

I have a couple other suggestions too:

1) Craigslist. Offer free flight to your destination. Book F seat in name of other party, switch seats on plane.

2) Book the F seat using your name, but NOT your MP number, and try any of the above. If, worst case, you can't make it work, and assuming you're already plat, just call in and cancel the F seat and redeposit the miles.

Thus the big "make sure it's their final segment" caveat.

Not true. I often have seen the instrument travel in F and the musician in Y.
