I think the OP means dining in flight as opposed to the lounge. I don't know the answer, but I doubt it. I know better airlines like CX don't allow it, and I can't imagine the UA FAs would want that extra work.

Ooops sure enough... no you can't on UA.. they don't load extra meals for guests and the UA F seats don't have an ottoman or any space for a guest to sit with you. Even if you're in the center section and there is an open F seat next to you they won't allow someone from a lower cabin to come to F for a meal.
I've never heard of any airline allowing this inflight. Suspect OP is confusing this with lounge access (and prehaps the FRA FCT?)
On some carriers (like Virgin) you can actually seat 2 people across from each other in Upper Class. One pax sits in the seat proper and the other one sits on the ottoman. The table is between the 2. On other carriers (like SQ) the seats are wide enough that you could fit 2 pax side by side. On United none of this is possible. And if it were it should only apply to 2 pax in the forward cabin - you can't upgrade someone for the meal.

Darn, I wanted to walk through the economy cabin auctioning off a first-class meal.

I've dined with my travel companions tons of times! (Swiss, Virgin Atlantic, LH) If it has an ottoman and a sizable table I can't imagine a reputable airline refusing. Granted we were booked the same cabin if that's what you mean.
Now United? GF barely has enough room for one person's meal let alone two. Plus the Ottoman is pretty tiny too. And that's not even including the power tripping FA cramping your style :P

There is also the case of the ottoman/extra space not having a seatbelt or extra oxygen mask.

On UA - no. The GF suite doesn't have an ottoman available.

But isn't that only applicable when both passengers are in the same cabin, regardless of airline? You can't really bring someone up from economy for a meal.
Does UA allow you to dine with someone in GF a la LX or LH? Can they be from a different class of service?
No. In fact, I was recently, and unnecessarily, lectured by an FA on PVG-ORD about how I needed to remain in my ticketed cabin. I was returning to the US with my parents and was getting them settled into GF before taking my seat in row 6 when I was "warned." And, no, there's no place for a visitor to sit in any case.

That's one of the things I love about CX. The "ottoman" has a seatbelt and they have an extension for the table that makes it large enough for two full F class setups. I've never tried to bring someone from another class of service, but have certainly dined many times with my traveling companion when both seated in F.

Ditto. GF and I flew ORD-AMS with her in GF and Me in Biz on an IPTE 777. I was in the first row of biz class right behind her seat in the last row of GF. I visited her for a short time mid-flight after the meal had been served and cleared. We chatted for about 5 minutes until I was admonished by the FA to return to my ticketed cabin.

AFAIK, no airline allows a customer from J or Y to come into F and eat with one of the F customers.
Even the premium airlines are pretty strict about having customers remain in their ticketed cabin or lower [i.e. those in J can go into the Y cabin, but Y cabin customers can't go into J].

I had to ask really nicely on LH to go up to the top of the A380 to see someone in C (granted, they were aware I had taken a downgrade, so they were pretty accommodating). I couldn't imagine them allowing anyone to go and dine there if they weren't booked in that cabin.
