United Express (Republic Air Q400) First Class - Carry On Refused
I was flying on a United regional carrier the other day and had my carry on refused by the flight attendant. This was after putting it in the bin. She said that 'roller bags' are not allowed on a regional plane. I have a very small bag specifically to fit on these planes and, even though I was first on in first class, she made me take it off. The ground crew commented 'this little thing wouldn't fit'? Anyone else have this happen?

Reason: missing (and needed) details updated in thread title
...and which carrier?? The rules on the carriers are all slightly different with regard to carryons/gate checks, but Ill confess Ive never had a reasonable bag turned away in FC...
Location: usually CSC/C side gates/random other places/juggling items down the concourse...

Some express carriers have a no carry-on policy. I think you may have met a FA that was enforcing her company's rules. It's dependent on which express operator you are booked but most FA's let the smaller ones slide. A no carry-on policy does not include the personal items, just the roller boards and things of that nature. It's just a luck of the draw what type of crew one encounters on the expresses.

That's ridiculous.
I once had a rogue Air Wisconsin GA at IAD insist my bag could not go on. He even watched me board and saw me bring it on, then later he came on board to hunt me down.
When he asked where my bag was, I pointed to the closed bin, and he ordered it off. I told him he's not in charge on the plane, but if the captain insisted it be checked, I'd be happy to.
The FA intervened and got rid of him, and then served me my pre-departure beverage.

It is the policy of the one the regionals--I just can't remember which one but they fly BUF-ORD often and no wheelies--no matter the size--are allowed in the cabin, even in first. I've never asked why. What's the point? But it's happened often enough that I knowit's their policy, regardless of individual enforcement.

I had a dork FA like that; most of the overheads were empty and 3 or 4 rollers were stowed without comment. Must have been my breath? You never know with these little darlings.

On UX most FAs return to their home base each night.
To the general topic, as has been report some UX carriers have a no rollaboards policy -- the issue is not the FA enforcing the policy, it is the carrier. While this may have been a FA on a power trip, it may have actually an FA following employer's policy.
Remember some UX carriers can / do have different policies, FARs than mainline UA.

There are four different aircraft on BUF-ORD (319, 320, RJ145, RJ170). The 170's definitely have room for a few rollerboards in FC, and since the 319 and 320's are mainline, it must have been the 145. The worst that would happen on that plane is that it would be gate checked (and given back plane-side at the destination). This is one of the few times an express aircraft can be better than a mainline. In the mainline, if all the overhead is gone, you're out of luck and can plan on getting your bag at baggage claim at your final destination (you hope).
Just another reason to board as soon as possible when traveling with a carry-on. On a side note (regarding the 145's), if you're in the emergency exit 2-seat side (12BC), and you have both seats to yourself (or are with a willing companion), you can fit a full size carry-on under the seat in front of you (sideways). This takes a good amount of smuggling expertise and you risk having someone take the seat next to you at the last minute, but you avoid the 10 (or more) minute wait for your bag after you come off the plane.
If you're at an airport where they bring the bags on a cart plane-side before allowing passengers to deplane, then ignore the previous advice, as it won't save you any time.
