UA vs AA on ORD-HNL First Class

Hello All,

I am looking to take a trip to Hawaii the first week of January. I am considering either AA or UA to Honolulu. Both flights are non-stop. How does the service compare, especially the food? I know that both airlines offer two meals/snacks on each flight ... what could I expect?

Thanks!

AA will probably be flown with a 763 meaning a angled lie-flat business seat in a 2-2-2 configuration. UA (I think) will be with their domestic 777, meaning you'll have a domestic F seat, not a lie flat first or business or businessfirst seat.

Food wise I's give AA the nod based on my recent DFW > HNL flight, but that's not really saying much. AA's choice was a large-ish salad or beef entree followed by a sundae and personal pizza prior to landing. UA will offer two entrees and a pre-arrival snack (eg calzone, hamburger, wrap, etc.)

AA has a non-stop ORD-HNL? When did that start up?

That flight has been around for years.

Thanks everyone! Quick question, J.Edward ... what were the meals on the return from HNL to DFW?

AA is better with food in F on that route by a mile and a half. Hawaiian themed dishes, comfy seats etc

It's only seasonal. It runs mid December to Early January and it also runs in the summer

Yeah, pretty much have to say AA hands down for all the reasons stated above.

Is there any difference in meals if I fly the ORD-HNL N/S vs the option to HNL via DFW, particularly the DFW-HNL-DFW portions?

Not sure -- did not fly AA on the return.

But honestly you might want to consider the hard product (eg seats) as the catering on any carrier to HNL will be mediocre at best, especially if you're willing to pick up something before hand to carry with you.

FWIW I'd prefer AA from ORD (over UA) due to the better seat and just buy whatever I wanted to eat at the terminal before boarding.

You might also want to review trip reports from here, airliners.net, and milepoint as they are often times accompanied with detailed pics and commentary on the service offerings.

AA wins on this one.

ORD-HNL in UA F is painful. You could go though IAH on UA and get on the XC configured 772. If you book F its a functional but aging lie flat.

Thanks, everyone! I think AA wins, based on what I've read here and elsewhere. I also decided to consider Delta via ATL or Alaska via SEA. Any thoughts on those airlines ... seats, food, etc.?

I've done AS though SEA and been very happy with the result. Food and service were great everytime. The seats are ok.
