Quick question: Got a link due to delayed flight yesterday.
It has three choices (miles, $ discount or % discount).
On the % Discount option it says its for Economy Tickets, but the terms and conditions states for most fares (included Business and First). Can this option be used to get the % off on Business Class fares?

Thanks in advance.
Why not try a fake booking?

I believe a fake booking would require me to redeem for that option first. I don't want to do that unless I know I can use it on a BC ticket. Otherwise I will take the miles.

a "fake/dummy booking" means to go to the point of where the price has been calculated and you will be asked to finish the transaction. You stop at this point and no harm is done.
I would tend to believe the detailed T&Cs over boilerplate words.
My response to the fake booking not working is that I would need the code to put in to see if it works for non-economy fares. I didn't want to redeem for the code until I had some assurance that the fine print applies and not the blurb on the first screen.

I am pretty sure, but I'd be wary of what business class fares are eligible... Can one use the % discount on a P or Z fare?
My hunch says, yes, but hopefully someone who has done this option can confirm or deny my hunch.
It is annoying if they do not explain the terms and conditions in the "choice" page before you decide which of the three options you will pick. Does it state how many miles, $$$, and what is the % discount?
1. 10000 Miles
2. $250 Domestic E-Cert
3. 20% Off E-Cert
Here's the language on the link: 20% Off E-Certificate: For travel to and from any city served by United or United Express during the travel period specified. Save off published United Economy fares on a qualifying flight purchased at united.com or on a united.com worldwide site. Ticketing and travel by November 16, 2013. Terms and conditions
And here's the wording from the T&C link:
12. Qualifying Fares: This discount may be used on following published fares: United First(R) (F,A) class, United Business(R) (J,C,D,Z) class and United Economy(R) (Y, B, M, E, U, H, Q, V, W, S, T, L, K) class fares.
13. Restricted Fares: This discount may not be used on the following fares: companion, travel industry, G class, contract, bulk, convention, tour conductor, children, family plan, government, group, military, senior citizen, student, youth, infant, tour basing, Round the World, Circle the Pacific, Visit USA, or any non-published fares. The discount certificate is not valid and does not apply if the discount amount equals or exceeds the base fare amount, therefore, the discount certificate will never be greater than the base fare and a residual value will not apply.
To me, there is a difference between the two. Does anyone have recent experience with using this option for J,C, D or Z booking?

The code isn't "redeemed" until you buy the ticket.

But he has to choose to take the discount code (as opposed to the miles or the $250 certificate) before he can do a test booking. By that point, it will be too late for him to change his mind and go with one of the other options.

Thanks for sharing, in this case, only "P" class, the cheapest Biz fare, is excluded. You should be good to go as long as your ticket is Z or higher.

Correct, the OP has not selected the option and in order to do a dummy booking, the OP will have to select the 20% discount first. The OP does not want to select the 20% discount option and be stuck with it if it the OP cannot book a specific Business Class ticket [i.e. P fare tickets].
