3 Carry on bags-not for GS but ok for jet blue flight crew!
Ok...let me start this by saying "I WAS WRONG!" No if/ands/or buts about it! It is clearly marked that one small bag and one green check bag is all one is allowed....but....
On the way TO a conference this week, I carried my roller, computer, and a small "trade show" pull up type of soft bag/carry on. I know, 3 pcs, but was allowed to in EWR. The pull up is the type that you put in a trade show booth. It is soft sided, and about 6"X4"X32". Had 2 green tags in EWR.
Today, I go to get on a plane at a small station. Have to check in as no e-boarding pass is available. Lady checks me in, says no bags-and all is well..or so I thought.
At the gate, the GA asks me "would you like me to check that for you?" I said no thanks...thinking that was the end of it. He then proceeds to tell me that if they have too many green tag bags, it will get left behind. I tell him to let me know if that is the case, and I will check it then.
He then proceeds to tell me "the FAA mandates that you can only have one-green-tag bag!" "I will need to take you off the flight and you can drive home!"
Long story short, he checks the show pull up.
Then...this is the "complaint" part of my story......2 FA's proceed to the gate agent and get 3 FREAKING GREEN TAGS! They both had 3 gate check pieces, EACH! The killer was, they were JET BLUE flight crew!!!!!!!!!
As (bad) luck would have it, the thing must have accidentally (intentionally) fallen (kicked, thrown, booted, punted, slammed) off the (roof) jetbridge as it was destroyed at EWR. The loops for the carry strap were even pulled off-with NO carry strap on it!!
So....this GS gets his stuff destroyed, while competitors crew gets to check 3 pieces....
Another great example of everything wrong at UA. Had the GA handled it professionally - "I'm sorry sir/ma'am, but UA's rules state only 1 green tag" and then not giving the "friend" exception to the JetBlue crew and then not destroying the bag, it would have been fine. But no, you get the classic UA -- yell at the customer (whether customer is right or wrong), blame the FAA or safety regulations for everything (whether it's true or not), help your friends rather than UA's best customers (OP is GS). Not to mention, of course, damaging the luggage.
It's sad because there are so many great UA employees that don't behave that way, but that exact pattern of behavior by some causes so much grief for all of us.
So, sympathy to you, OP. I'll let the "I'm sure you don't have all of the facts" and "what did you expect for breaking the rules" posters take it from here. Please don't feed the trolls!
Flightcrew are exempt from the carry on rules per the FAA. They have required flight bags etc so they can bring on whatever they want as long as it can be safely stowed.

sometimes facts get in the way of a good rant / employee bashing.

So if im reading this correctly, a GS was allowed to carry on an extra bag on the way out, then forced to follow the UA rules on the way back- which as part of the rules approved by the FAA, is effectively FA regulation. And now is complaining.
GS get a lot of leaway on some things, but not on FAA regs. Perhaps someone should complain about the employee in EWR who allowed the extra bag on board, and could have potentially resulted in a large fine for UA.
You got caught trying to break the rules. End of story. Time to move on.
Its been mentioned on other threads (possibly biggest whopper thread) that the baggage limits are not really FAA regulations, but in fact policies that UA submitted to the FAA that were subsequently approved. This is evidenced by the fact that every airline has slightly different baggage policies.
So I am not saying that OP was right are wrong, but are the baggage policies truly FAA regulations?

Once it's filed, it's policy that has to be followed.

not while they are flying on their own accord. OP indicates these were Jet Blue flight attendants, therefore, must abide by UA baggage policy.
Its called professional courtesy, and I expect that all airlines treat other crew like this, as they should.
Thanks for being grown up and being up-front about you knew you were slightly to the lee side of the rules.
One of the funnier moments on planes is watching someone board the plane, stop, let out a deep breath, and tell the FA - "Ive been flying ALL DAY"
S/he has been flying ALL DAY ALL WEEK ALL MONTH, after all....(hyperbole acknowledged)...you pilots can hide in the front, but the FA and GA have to deal with all kinds of schizos like me....and me....
