Different flight option offered at OLCI

Has anyone experienced this? For me this was the first time. OLCI today for SJU-EWR-PHX and a new page popped up offering me a different flight combination SJU-IAD-PHX, complete flight details, seat map etc.It was marked that I could choose this option for "0" $ or revert to my original reservation. I would have arrived 4 hours earlier, but had applied RDU for the original trip and did not want to lose my upgrades. Interesting to say the least, something I could like. But within the 24 hour window exit seats and all other good seats are usually gone on the optional routing.

This is nothing new. I see this all the time. You can do SDC to another routing as long as the fare rules allow the other connecting airport.

This is a nice benefit from the CO side of things.

The only tickets that I do not see the SDC option are the weekend web fares ("United Specials"). Those specifically exclude the SDC option, though airport agents have never refused a request to standby for an earlier flight.

Appreciate the comment. This has happened to me the first time today and
I was quite surprised. Maybe because most of my flying is International.

I haven't seen these either - are they offered every time there's another flight available, even if the flight is not an earlier one?

Also offered on international flights, albeit only ones where there is more than one flight per day. Search "SDC" for hundreds of pages of discussion here

Agree about the nothing new, but at least for me, it pops up VERY rarely.

Exactly. And with fuller planes, it's harder to find fare buckets if you fly on lower fares

Since it (apparently) requires existence of the same fare bucket, day of flight, that you had previously booked into, it's likely to be seen more by the YBM folk, and almost never by someone booking into K, S, T or L. I'm thinkin'.

Thanks, I hadn't considered this.

But wouldn't the YBM tix offer the upgrade from fare class, and one wouldn't need to apply an RPU (as was mentioned by ExLeft in post #1)?

Good catch! Maybe a lower class that remained available (but still higher than anything I'd buy short of an emergency). Or something else?

Absolutely not. Unless the flight is extremely full (~Y2 or less in my experience) all of the fare buckets will re-open close to departure, anywhere from a few days out to 3 hours out (even if they were previously gone), specifically for SDC. Remember, these are restricted fares, so you can't generally buy them at that point.

I hardly ever fly on YBM fares these days, and almost always have a range of flights to choose from on SDC. Most recently I changed a Sunday 9pm DEN-ORD G fare (~$65 one way) to an earlier flight, and I had 5 flights to choose from.

It really is only on the very full flights that you don't get offered SDC, even in low fare classes.

I was on a sleazy pass flight from LAX-IAD on 10/25 in business on one of the flights with lie flat seats (left around 10 am) and they offered me flights leaving an hour or two earlier in the day, still nonstop LAX to IAD.

That was the first time I saw this as well.

but many here on FT are OLCI at T-24 hours before the lower fare buckets are reopen, hence rare for discount flyers to see these offers.

Possible, but in my experience it's more common for all of the fare buckets to be there at T-24 than for them to re-appear later. This is definitely a function of how busy the flight(s) is (are) though.
