I know they give a 5% discount. They say that upgrades are not permitted (I do not care about that). Do they permit miles and EQM to be earned?
IME, PMUA was 10% off lowest available fare, otherwise everything else was the same. I got EQM/RDM and cleared upgrades, too. Just had to provide name and relation of deceased, plus funeral home contact info so that UA can verify. I don't know if this has changed post-merger.
I may be wrong here (not a first) but isn't the bereavement fare just a Q fare? Maybe that was the old UA.
I know if a flight has seats available lower than Q than will simply sell you those but Q was used when a flight was near full and only Y,B,C,F,A type fares were left.
Q would/ does earn PQM, it is just a higher level economy fare. I am surprised that someone told you these fares keep you off the UG list.
Hopefully your question is just a hypothetical. Good luck.

That's what I recall as well, and it didn't have to be a funeral (could be a major hospitalization). An "emergency" fare. Got EQMs, was able to upgrade. Very flexible on making changes to the return for free.
My father passed away a couple of weeks ago and I looked into a bereavement fare. The hassle (documentation) didn't seem worth the 5% discount so I passed.
My wife had an unpleasant experience with pmUA. She flew to see her brother who was about to die. When he did pass she wanted to extend the stay to attend the funeral. UA treated the request as a strandard change with the associated fees and fares.
Bottom line is that UA is not very helpful in these circumstances. Not saying that they should be or shouldn't - just stating my experience.

Particularly since it's pretty easy to find other 5% discounts.

Yes. When my father passed, United was so far above everyone else's price, it didn't make sense to fly with them.
I think the times of airlines providing cheap bereavement fares are now gone. I'm guessing partially because it was abused as per the Seinfeld episdoes!

Last November, I got EQM/RDM on a G fare with 5% off. Just provided name/relation/funeral home info. No problems at all.
It definitely used to be 10% off the least expensive available fare at the time of booking in the pmUA world. Earned norm EQM and RDM. Documentation could be provided after the fact for the discount refund. Pretty easy to do & well worth it the one time I needed it.
