Buy 50k PQMs on Jan 1st?

If one bought 50k PQM on a January 1st, you would have Gold for two years correct? If at 10cents per mile all in that's $5k, or $2500/year for Gold for two years.

correct but last year the cost was a lot higher than 10 cpm in January

Can someone explain this?

Is it some kind of promo or program UA has to let you buy PQMs and qualify for Gold without flying?

I'm interested as well. I'll be at ~91K miles by Dec and not very interested to do mileage runs to requal for 1K. But...I may end up having to.

Just curious more than anything after reading the end of year PQM thread. From what I can tell, why spend a bunch of money at the end of the year, why not just spend a bunch at the beginning of the year and be done with it for two years. The other thread(s) about PQM referred to the cost about 15cents/mile now, and 10cents/mile earlier in the year. I just assumed it would be closer to the lower end at the beginning of the year. Guess some bean-counter already put the house edge in the game.

it was 10 cpm for PQM/RDMs midyear but it was >15cpm until March/April

Supposing you were to buy 50K on 1/1/2013, you'd have Gold status through 1/31/15. Where I'm confused is why you'd do this. If you were concerned about your 2014 status, that would be because you weren't going to fly that much during 2013. But if you weren't going to fly that much (certainly less than 50K), how is $2500 to have Gold status during 2013 a good deal?

This is something I've never understood. I could never imagine people buying status till I discovered FT. Why would ANYONE want to do this? I think most of us can agree that flying domestically & on most intl flights w UA sucks. That said, if you must fly over 100K a year then status is a great thing to have. But I would rather fly MUCH less on UA & domestically on any airline & have no status then have status and HAVE to fly more.

I will admit I enjoy travelling internationally on foreign airlines but status means nothing w most of these flights. I get treated better as a F passenger on say, Korean airlines then I would as a C passenger w top status. But I HATE flying within the US. Status helps but if I could give up all domestic flights and lose any status I would. I can't understand why ANYINE would want to fly MORE then they have to within the US, status or not

You can only cancel non-refundable fares to keep the accelerator miles, right?

So how does purchasing 50k miles get you Gold for two years?

If you buy PQM at the beginning of the year, you get status right away (year 1) and then at the end of the year, you'd have enough to qualify for status the following year (year 2).

Because you already had earned status for year 1 during year 0?

Like in my case I'm going to hit 50k just before the new year. That gives me gold for 2013.

And if I buy 50k in January, I'd be earning gold for 2014.

So you're not getting 2 years of gold by buying 50k PQMs, just attaining status early in the year?

Sorry but no.

I know most people say yes on this. But in fact it is still no.

Remember the new 4 paid segments requirement?

So even you have 50K PQM on 1/1/2013, you will still be a GM until you have flew 4 segments (unless you have a CO PP or UA M+ Club Card, which is another $400...)
