The 24-hour cancellation feature is only valid if the ticket is purchased at United.com or via United Reservations.
Terms and conditions
Applies to tickets booked at united.com or with United Reservations.
The 24-hour timeframe begins at the time your ticket is purchased.
Requests for refunds will be credited back in the original form of payment.
Group tickets and tickets purchased using Western Union, cash or e-certificates are excluded.
Reservations that are being held but have not yet been purchased are excluded.
Any FareLockSM fees paid to hold a reservation will not be refunded.
I thought the DOT rule was a plain 24 hour cancellation, nothing specific about website or directly booking? I can see things like Priceline would not qualify. However, would things booked through a regular agent (e.g. AMEX) get the 24 hour cancellation protection?
OK, not sure I'm seeing the same thing as what's being talked about in this thread.
I'm being offered 30K or 45K RDM at 2.1 cpm, $630 or $945.
If I click one of the offers I get a Premiere Accelerator offer, at 15 cpm on PQMs.
Is Premier Accelerator the same as Elite Maximizer?
How do you get 10 cpm for PQMs?
What is a good cpm for RDMs?

3. Cancel your reservation before the 24 hour window closes.
Those 50k RDM/EQM that you purchased would hit your account within the next 24 hours. Note: there is no refund or cancelation allowed on that RDM/EQM purchase.
Is this "double miles" option only available for those 25k itineraries?
I'm not seeing it on a SFO-ZRH option. They're only offering 30 or 45k RDM and the same number of PQMs.

(My addendum above underlined in caps.)
Alternatively one could but 3 or 4 shorter itineraries (at United.com) and purchase RDM and PQM for each of the itineraries and then cancel all of the tickets. (Unsure if the system will allow multiple successive RDM/PQM purchases for the same itinerary.)
Data point: I needed to buy 2000 PQM a month ago. First 2000 mile itinerary I purchased gave me the option of buying either 4000 or 8000 miles. Same night bought a 500 mile itinerary, was offered either 3000 or 6000 miles. Same night bought a 200 mile itinerary, was offered 1000 or 2000 miles. Same night purchased 2000 RDM and PQM via the third itinerary. Next day cancelled all 3 tickets. Charges appeared on credit card in 2-3 days, credits took 5-6 days. RDM credited immediately, PQM credited in 2-3 days dated on the date of purchase. (The number of miles offered is not always double or triple the itinerary distance. Seems that’s true early in a calendar year but later in the year the offers seem random.)

Looks to me like accelerator works on award tix too, so if already a 1k or buying up to get to 1k, you could book a very long award itinerary, buy the miles, and then cancel the award ticket.

Right now I am seeing offers of RDM for a domestic itinerary of 2.9 cpm plus 8.5 cpm for PQM (11.4 cpm total). The same itinerary was offering RDM and PQM for about a total of about 28 cpm at the end of December. That ticket includes another ticket for a companion who has no status and that offer for RDM/PQM is substantially lower than mine. As per the other thread, prices increase a little at each step up the Mileage Plus status ladder, just another way United chooses to “reward” their most loyal customers.

Agreed, although per the website only Plat and 1K have “No fee” for “award redeposit fee for tickets issued on or after June 15, 2011.” (Not for the case of a Gold who makes an award reservation and then makes Plat or 1K and cancels said reservation if they would waive the fee.)
I currently have a paid ticket and an award ticket with identical itineraries and my RDM/PQM offers are identical for the 2 tickets. (Fascinating that the website tells me EVERY SINGLE time I look at it to add my MP # to the award itinerary, even though it is clearly displayed under “My Itineraries”. Welcome to United.com! )

I believe that whether or not you have to pay a redposit fee depends on your status at the time of redeposit. The miles have to have come from your account, though.
So, if you had 65k miles and booked a 17.5k award itinerary out into the future and then used accelerator to buy 35k equity miles to make 1K, you should be able to cancel and redeposit for free at that point.

Maybe, just maybe, there will be a better rate later in the year, for a 1K with BIS miles already accumulated...but I doubt it will be that much better if it happens at all.
