This may work well in the US, but what about overseas? Many gates overseas neither have printers to print new BP without FFP nor have scanners for mobile BP...
Also, when you take off your FFP number while you are still on upgrade list and it is your turn to clear, would that be a problem? Technically one reservation could have two numbers, FQTV for miles and FQTS for status related benefits including upgrades, but AFAIK Shares could only accept one number unlike Apollo/fastair...

FYI - message I received from 1k desk on Jan 2, 2012:
"Historically, we awarded Systemwide Upgrades at the beginning of the calendar year. We heard from many 1Ks that they wanted to receive their Systemwide Upgrades when they earned them, rather than waiting until the beginning of the next calendar year. So, we decided to change the program starting in 2011 to let members receive their upgrades as soon as they earned them.
Several members have raised a valid point that receiving these Systemwide Upgrades earlier in the 2011 transitional year may result in some expiring before they can use them in 2012. To address this concern, we will have a policy in effect that will allow 1K customers who earn Systemwide Upgrades in 2011 to extend their upgrades until the end of 2012, on an as-requested basis. If you earn Systemwides for reaching 100,000 EQM or 120 EQS in 2011, and are unable to use them prior to their original expiration date, you will just need to call us in 2012 and request an extension. By allowing an extension through the end of 2012, we address the needs of those customers who want to access their Systemwide Upgrades earlier in a way that also is advantageous to those who want to use them later during this transition period. "
Looks like the exception language only applied to last year, not this year.

Of course they can print out new boarding passes at the gate. They do this all the time when they move passengers to new seats.
And yes, if you take out the FF number while on the list, you won't clear. On the other hand, if you put in a US/LH or other number instead, you won't clear either.

Some oversea stations don't. They just crossed out the old seat and write manually on the old BP...
I had an experiement during my last trip. To my surprise, my name was always on the UG list even after I took off the FFP number. I would not have cleared had I kept my FFP number in the reservation, so I am curious what if it happened to be my turn to clear... Will there be another "check" to see how the upgrade is supported when clearing? I would love to hear first-hand experiences in this scenario.

Do you REALLY believe that there was a big demand from FF to change the issuance of the SWU's? If you do believe it, well.... There has to be some financial benefit to UA to do this. They have also heard from a lot of FF that we do NOT want the SWU's to come during the year. Funny how they have selective hearing.

Yeah, this is total garbage - we already had the nice early deposit option (Oct/Nov for 4 if you wanted), and we had 13 months of usage. Now it can be as low as 12 months, and they're forced on us.
I have yet to see a single 1K/GS post that they are pleased by this change.

In theory that should work, since you have 12 months from the date of activity to request missing mileage. Since the mileage would show up on your account with the actual flight date, would the 12 month calculation be back dated to the date of the flight that put you over 1k, or would it be based on the month that the system recognized you as hitting 1k?

Does anyone know what the cut-off date is?
I made 1k on 12/21 last year but my SWUs expire 12/31/12. I know others have an exp of 1/31/13.
The extra month would be helpful since I always go away for the holidays returning in Jan. UA won't extend it anymore. (The agent seemed very surprised she couldn't extend it by 5 days)

this is exactly what i have done. I stopped the UA mileage counter at 98,990 ytd and switched to AA following the 1K/Exec Plat match. Not the smartest decision by UA
If I fly on UA, but have a LH FF account, can I put EQM/miles into the LH program? And if so, can I re-deposit them back to the MP program at the end of the year?
Alternatively, how could I take my MP# off my reservation? Is there a way to do this on-line? I have miscalculated (with CC EQMs and Z EQM)and will hit 100,000 miles sooner than I wanted.
I have a flight to Australia in August and the upgrades have already cleared w SWUs..so if I took the MP# off that reservation, then I could request miles be credited in Dec? That would hold off requalifying till the end of the year.

You can not first get the miles in the LH program, and afterwards request that they be moved into your UA account.
Why don't you just call UA reservations and have them delete the FF number from your reservation? I don't know what might happen to your upgrade though.

I think that some newly minted 1K's, i.e. former Plats / 1P's / etc, might have been wanted the SWU's as soon as they got them.... because they didn't have any yet. I had a friend in that situation who didn't understand last year why he couldn't get any SWU's immediately.
And hey, COdbaUA might as well cater to newly-minted 1K's.... after all, the existing ones are over-entitled.
