2012 Global Entry fee refund - Plat and 1K [new credit process as of 27 Jul 2012]
Is there any info on how this works (or will work)?
I understand it can take a few months to get the appointment for the interview. Should I apply now?

This is a page I hadn't seen before that is linked to from the premier benefits page. Since it says you have to be Plat or 1K for the 2012 program year, I wonder if that means I can apply for GE now and submit my reimbursement in May (when I achieve plat) to take advantage of it for a trip next month.

Global Entry compensation benefit
Global Entry is a U.S. Customs and Border Protection program that allows expedited clearance for pre-approved, low-risk travelers upon arrival in the United States.
MileagePlus compensates 2012 Global Services, Premier 1K and Premier Platinum members for the $100 Global Entry application fee, for new applications. Starting later in June, there will be an automated process to take advantage of this benefit, in the form of a code that can be redeemed during the Global Entry application process. Until that time, eligible members may be compensated in the form of a $100 united.com TravelBank credit. To apply for this credit, please follow these steps:
1.Complete your Global Entry application at the Global Online Enrollment System (GOES): https://goes-app.cbp.dhs.gov/
2.Send an email to [email protected], with the following information:
Your MileagePlus number (eight-character, alphanumeric)
The name on your account
A confirmation of your Global Entry application submission, such as a payment summary screenshot, email confirmation, or approval letter
Once we have verified your eligibility, we will deposit a $100 credit into your MileagePlus account’s TravelBank balance, which you can use to book travel on united.com. Please allow 2-4 weeks for this process to complete. See TravelBank Terms and Conditions.

The Global Entry compensation benefit applies to new applications only and has a maximum value of $100 USD every five years. Members with an existing Global Entry membership can take advantage of this benefit during their next renewal. The overall compensation benefit is open only to members who earned status for the 2012 program year, and who applied for Global Entry after January 1, 2012. The TravelBank credit process described above will end in June, when the automated process for this benefit takes effect.

Since United will not reimburse existing GE members, you should wait if you want the refund. This thread will give you an idea on how long the processing time is :http://www.flyertalk.com/forum/pract...ng-time-7.html. The conditional approval can take anywhere from 1 week to 2 months. The appointment time varies for different airports.

I just wanted to put in my plug for how fabulous GE is. I signed up at the beginning of this year and I've gotten to use it several times. It can be a HUGE time-saver -- especially in places like IAD where the customs lines are impossible. I think I've already saved several hours of line-standing time.
My one piece of guidance: say 'No' to all of the questions on the customs declaration if you can possible manage/rationalize it. On a recent entry I marked 'yes' for 'Do you have any food' because I'd bought some cheese in CDG DF. That forced me to get back in the regular line to speak to a real, live customs agent.

Good news is the "food" question on the GE screen is less inclusive than the one on the paper form. The paper form asks about "food", which basically means anything. The GE version asks about only specific kinds of food, I believe dairy is one of them. The "food" item on the paper form is quite annoying, and because it is placed inbetween specific kinds of food, many people don't catch it.
You are basically always going to have to speak to an officer if you are bringing in dairy - lying about it isn't really a solution.
FYI....if anyone travels to Canada relatively frequently, Nexus, which is the joint Canada/US trusted traveler program, costs half as much as GE, and now includes GE membership.

Great program. and cudoos to UA for doing this. We have another 2.5 years before renewal. But enjoy everyone.
Just remember to ask and or be sure to get the sticker on the back of your passport. If you do get the X, go to closest officer, cut in front of line and hold it up. By procedure they will take you next and get you on your way. As other posters have stated, always caution on the side of honesty if unsure. It did not take much longer to see officer, and peace of mind knowing that you will not have your GE revoked for a simple mistake is great peace of mind. The system works and so does the quick talking to a person if unsure.

Even if you answer yes to any of the questions, you get head-of-line privilege at the regular line which is still a big time saver. As others have said, be accurate in your answers.

Has anybody had any luck getting their kids enrolled in either GE or NEXUS? Note: I didn't ask if CO would pay for it, I simply asked if it's possible considering the iris scan.
Imagine the frustration the day next summer when you and your family are coming back from a vacation, the immigration line is looooong, you and your spouse have GE/NEXUS cards in your pockets, but your son/daughter doesn't.
For 2+ hours you'll stand there, staring at the kiosk, while the kids run around in circles......
