United has some very good procedures we use to preclude incidents like this from hopefully happening if they are followed.

Wasn't some or all of the instrument equipment turned off for the runway this crew was supposed to land on?

Even then though, you'd hope that the pilots would realize they were about to land on a taxiway when they cross what should be the threshold and realize there is no runway numbers or markings, the edge lights are in blue and there is a yellow line where the white centerline should be. I thought I read upthread that you can go around pretty much until your wheels touch down, so even at the last minute the actual taxiway landing could be avoided.

an airport beacon question
we've all seen the white and green rotating airport beacon lights either from the air (way cool imho) or while driving by an airport (such as last night when driving 101n from sjc to sfo) so with that.....
is there a requirement as to to where the beacon needs to be located or just "somewhere on the airport property"? also, i would think that in this day of gps and such, the airport beacon is now more of a hold over from "the old days" where you needed much more of a visual fix to find the airport
sjc: i saw the beacon located on top of a parking garage near what i think was the ne corner of the airport close to hwy87
nuq (moffet field): i saw the beacon located on top of the large airship hanger
redwood city: i saw the beacon located on a tower near the north end of the field
sfo: the bacon was not visible from the freeway but i've seen it before-just can't remember where.

I've been flying mostly UA between Europe and North America for the past 15 years now, clocking up over half a million United miles and not a single bumpy landing springs to mind Work now takes me eastwards so my United days are all but over, therefore, I should just like to take this opportunity to say thanks to all you pilots for getting me and my fellow passengers safely there and home again all those times. Keep up the good work.

You're welcome, and thanks for the nice words. Sorry to see you leaving the friendly skies, please try to fly us when you can.

Are you excited about United's Africa/Bahrain expansion and your new uniform?
Not excited, but always happy when we can grow our own flying somewhere vs giving it to some code share partner. I won't be flying those routes on the airbus, but talking to my Delta friends those routes are profitable for them, so hopefully it will be for us. I'll be excited when we bring new aircraft on the property and start recalling pilots.
Personally, really don't care about new uniforms, just as the new paint job on the planes really didn't concern me. It's window dressing, trying to show that United is doing something, when we are still just middling along as an airline. I think folks would rather have a better flight experience than seeing employees in new uniforms. As long as the uniform doesn't end up brown or yellow, and the company buys the uniform for the employee, really doesn't matter to me personally.
Thanks for the question, and for flying United.

I had an FA announce that the captain would sound a chime as we passed 18000 ft signalling it was ok use to personal electronics.
I always thought that was automated, I suppose because it always seemed so accurate - i.e. never in however many hundreds of flights do I ever recall it missed or to my knowledge early/late.
Is this something that automatically happens, or are you pushing a button every time? Is it tied to the TA or 18000 ft - so in places with different TAs would it sound at a different altitude?

As we pass 18,000' either climbing or descending, we have several things we do. I don't remember the Airbus stuff, but AD can help you there. On the 757/767, as we climb through 18,000', we turn off a few exterior lights, set out altimeters to a sea-level standard pressure of 29.92" Hg., (in all domestic flying; other countries have different altimetry requirements) and chime the smoking sign. We also read a checklist if it's the decent. All UA planes do this, and perhaps a few other things.
The point is, we have other stuff we do at that altitude. The smoking sign chime is only one of them. It's been so long since flying any international for me that I don't know if it's a Transition Level/Transition Altitude thing or an 18,000' thing if the TL/TA is different.

Just as Airborne said, when we pass 18,000' we set standard Altimeter setting and ding the seatbelt sign to signal the end of sterile cockpit to the FA's. That is also their clue to make the announcement on the electronic devices.

Yep, IT STINKS!! Any time Tilton and gang give our jobs and flying to less experienced pilots and smaller planes it stinks.

Is it known to the mainline pilot community that XJET will be taking away mainline flying? I thought they were replacing another company on existing routes.
