outstanding use of channel 9
i just wanted to share that i hope you have the opportunity to have captain goodfellow driving a 75.....
january 30, 2005, ua 7 jfk-sfo
in addition to having channel 9 on, he used it to give hourly on-the-hour flight updates including altitude, speed, location, atc ctr and for anyone listening to channel 9 for their first time, they got a "channel 9 atc 101 class"-he gave all the how to's, the what's done by each center, etc, and he even gave a detailed description of the 75 complete with takeoff weight, speed, fuel loaded, consuption and the like and then did the same on approach. he spoke for a good ten minutes with each update and it was pretty cool even for a vet like me.

Is he not the coolest? Got him DEN-BOS in December and (being in First), waited till the opened the cockpit door after landing so I could thank him in person. Also sent a letter to WHQ.

Haven't had him, but I enjoy channel 9 as well. It was good for some pre-flight entertainment on my last flight out of BWI.
I was listening and we just stopped on the taxi way and sat. Apparently they were laughing about no one being able to take off due to a flock of seagulls sitting on the runway. They had to send someone out in a truck the shoo them off.
My wife and I got quite the chuckle that we were sitting there due to seagulls.

Channel 9 is really entertaining and when you have a great captain like Mr goodfellow, even better !!! Makes up for the lousy IFE on domestic flights !

way "coolest"......
even explained runway headings and pointed out a flaw in a movie where they referred to "runway 44"
i sent him a thank you note in-flight and got one back asking me to wait after we landed as he wanted to say thanks in person
I had a similar experience on a 73 with a FO Wolfe, if I remember correctly. I was on a flight from SAN - DIA and he explained many things over Channel 9, asking for questions from the cabin and what not. Definately an enjoyable experience!
Employees like this that go the extra mile is why I stick with UA.

i asked the f/a if it was ok to send a thank you note to the captain and when told yes, i wrote it on the back of my business card but i did make sure the f/a read it so that she knew it was on the up-and-up

I've always loved channel 9. It's the ham radio-lovin' geek in me, I think. But alas, I have yet to get a really interesting commentary on any of my flights. I'll keep my fingers crossed! In the meantime, flying home this past weekend, I enjoyed watching our stats and the live map on the seat monitor on the 777s I was on (SIN-NRT, and NRT-SEA).
